Jonnrnhu, it. THAMILYTON', O F' PORT-LAND, OREGON Letters Patent No- 66,706, dated July I6, 1867.
IMPROVED AIR ens.
TD ALIFWHOM ITQ'MATY CONCERN:
Be it known that I, J ONATIIAN It. HAMIL'rON, of Portland, in the county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Air Beds; and thefollowing is 'a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, 'nmking :1. part of this specification, in whi eh-- l Figure 1 represents an outside view of the bed in perspective. Figure represents n. longitudinal section, showin Figure 3 shows aseetion of the valvetube-forinflotihg the bed, and modest Figure 4 is a detached viewdof one of the serew-sta y fastenings. Theobject of my invention iszto make ai'r beds, ofnny suitable size or dimensions, that will keep level and in proper form whether partially or fully inflated.-
My invent-ion consists in the construction, arrangement, and co fastenings with the stay cords and air-tight, water-proof bed-tick.
I My invention further consists in the self-closing puppet-valve tubes for infiatingthe bed, and the manner of ,securingth'csame to the tick nir tight,
That others skilled in the art may make and'u the drawings, and to the letters marked thereon.
secu'ringit air-tight to the tick;
mbination of the screw and cop-nut stay- The cloth or ticking for making myimprovcd air beds 'is coated on one side with India-rubber,- or other elastic cement, so as to make it impervious to water, or so as to prevent the air,
when compressed, from passing through it.. The large surfaces; top and bottom, A A, being cut to the desired size, and a-lsc that portion which forms the ends 13 B and sides being prepared suitable width and length, the screw and cap-nut stay an; ure insertcd in any desired number, in both top and bottom, so that they will corne opposite to each other, 'leaving the spaces between them equidistant. The stay-fastenings a may also beinserted in the ends B. and sides in. thescmc manner; Into the eyes 0 c c in the inner ends of the stoy-t'ostenings a' a the twine or cords 61 1 are made secure, they ull being the required length togivethc bed the proper form when inflated, and are-cross-tied together, so that each stay forms a brace eech way for other stays and the ticking-outside, so as to-prerent the bed from sagging or swaying off when the weight of a person rests upon one side of it. The
-i'astcnings button-headedscrews 4 11" and cep-riutsd'd cfi'ectually close the aperture through which the stern of the screw I passes, so that no air can escape. The stays 6 hbeiiig properly secured to them, the edgeso'f the ticking being cemented and fastened together, the bed is formedand complete, all but the valve-tube D for inflating, which I constructin the mauner'shewn in fig. 3. I The tube D having a screw-thread on the outside, about one-half of its lengthgon to which are fitted two plates, e e, between which the ticking is clamped turning the plates,
by means of the projecting pins ff, sothat no air can escape where the inflating-tube D is inserted, The interior arrangement of the tube, for admitting the airfrorn without and holding itin, is composed of'a cone-sent puppet-valve, It, with a stem, j, to gnide ih the stem sliding in two heads, 7c k, which have a series of small holes, ii, through thcmto admit} the air when forced in from theoutside, which easily passes the valve It, which is closedjnstuntly, and held firmly in its seat by the air inside when the pressure is withdrawn from without, thusmaking a'comple'te s lf-actingiand closing stopper, which is p ret ented from beingppened from without by the screw-cap m being turned into the-outer end of the tube D, so that all isssecure, and when partly or wholly inflated, is an easy and most desirablespring-bed for all, and especially in the summer season.
It has heretofore been found very difficult-to attach stays or braces forkeeping air beds in a. uniform position and have them air-tight, which may be done with certainty with my screw and cap-nut, as above described. I am well aware that air beds have been'constructcd in various ways, and air pillows are used for: the twol'o'ld purpose of- '1'l!lows and life-preservcrs; and it is not my purpose to claim anything with regard to waterproof or air-tight fabrics, ortlie'manner of cementing the joints of the fabric together.
What I claim as niy inve'n'tion, n'nd desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- 1. The button-hended screw and cap-nutstay-fastening, as constructed and combined with air-tight or water- "proof fabrics, for the purposes herein specified.
, 2. I claim the self-closing puppet valvc and tube with thescrew and plates, when constructed as described,
and used in combination with air be ds, subst'zintinlly as and for the purpose herein set forth.
