BREAK-LEVER LOCK FOR GUNS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 667,051, dated January 29, 1901.
Application filed October 16, 1899.
- To all whom it may concern:
j which the slide also forms the safety Be it known that I, JASPER LEANDER ACK- ERMAN, of Monon, in the county of White and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Break Lever Looks for Guns, of which the,following is a specification.
In the patent granted to me September 26, 1899, there is shown and described a means for locking the break-lever of a breech-loading gun to prevent-it from being opened by unauthorized persons, in which device a bolt entering the lever was actuated by a rotarybarrel turned by a detachable key.
. My presenttinvention comprises an organization of devices for accomplishing this result,:in which an external slide is made to lock said lever either through a bolt or by a direct engagement, or both, and in which the slide may be soorganized as to constitute the safety of the hammer-less gun, as hereinafter more fully described with,reference to the drawings, in which- .Figure l is a longitudinal section of the grip portion ofthe gun, showing the locking of the break-lever through a slide which acts both directly and also through a bolt and in 77 lockthe triggers, the gun being shown in the locked position and the slide also locked by a rotary barrel and key. Fig. 2 is a similar view, the parts being shown in an unlocked position. Fig. 5 is a modification in which the slide operates upon the bolt directly through acam-slot; and Fig. 6 is a plan of a further modification in which the bolt does not enter the lower side of the break-lever, but comes up on one side of it. Fig. 7 is a detail of a further modification.

When the slide D is pushed forward, as in Fig. l, the lever B is thrown into the recess of the break-lever A and the lever G is turned to bring its pin 9' against thetrigtrers. so that the gun is safe, but also locks the break-lever A, so that unauthorized persons may not open the gun and remove the car-' tridges or otherwise tamper with the same.
In some cases I may not employ the locklever B and bar 0, but may make the forward end of the external slide D bifurcated to embrace and hold the rear end of the breaklever, as shown in Figs. land 6, which makes a simpler and more directlock, or botli looking devices may be employed.
As another modification of my invention I may, as seen in Figs. 3 and 4, make the locking-bolt B to. slide vertically and operate it through a lever L and spring cam-face d on the external slide D,or, as in Fig. 5, the siideD may have ahorizontal extension dh'provided with an inclinedslot d, in which'a pin attached to the lower end of the bolt plays and isdirectly operated by theslide. A levercatch K is fulcrumed at the forward edge of the lock-case and its forward end is pulled up by a spring F. On the rear end of this catch the cam-head H of the rotary barrel of the lock bears. When this cam-head-is turned into one position, as shown in Fig. 1, it allows the spring F to pull the catch K up behind the extension (1 of the slide, so that the slide cannot be pulled back; but when the cam-head H is turned it acts upon the rear end of the catch and draws down the front end of the catch, so that it is out of the way of the rearward movement of the slide extension, the hooked end of the catch rising after the slide is drawn back and hooking in front of the extension (Z, as shown in Fig. 2, so that the slide is locked also in its open position. I would also have it understood that variousolher modifications may be made withoutdeparting from my invention, the leading feature of which is to be'found in the com= bination, with the break-lever, of an external slide arranged to lock said lever cit-her directly or indirectly.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with the break-lever in a breech-loadinggun; of an external slide arranged to lock said lever and a separate locking mechanism for the slide substantially as and for the purpose described.
2. The combination with the break-lever in an external slide arranged to lock said lever, and an independent lock forlocking the slide arranged behind the same, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
