INVENTOR w QM ATTORNEYS IllIIIILlIIe WITNESSES:

APPARATUS FOR SATURATING WOOD.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 666,915, dated January 29, 1901. Application ned Jury 5, 1900. serai No. 22,517. (No model.)
.To all whom it may concern,.-
Beit known that I, MAX BACHERT, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Saturating Wood, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in apparatus for saturating wood, and is particularly directed to improve the apparatus shown in United States Letters Patent No. 602,713, dated April 19, 1898, to Max Bachert and David W. ONeil, although the invention is not limited to such apparatus.
The invention has for its principal object to produce a construction in which wood may be eihciently saturated, let us say, with a fireprooiing solution and at the same time clamped firmly in place, so that the cars or other wood-carriers may be run in and out of the saturating-tank freely, as the wood being retained in place will not be liable to catch or strike against the sides of the tank, so as to bind.
In the accompanying draWingsI have shown a structure in which my invention is embodied.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section across a Bachert and ONeil saturatingtank, showing my improvements applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a broken-away side elevation of a portion of the tank or cylinder, which cylinder is in many cases of considerable length-say ninety feet. Fig. 2 also shows the section-line l 1, on which Fig. 1 is taken. Fig. 3 is a section on the line 3 of the curved clamps.
In the drawings, a is the saturation-tank, preferably in the form of a horizontal cylinder suitably supported and of considerable length. This cylinder is provided Within with rails l), upon which runs a suitable Wood carrier or car c, of which there may be several to accommodate a long pile of lumber. Located within the tank are suitable clamps d, which are preferably curved and T-shaped in cross section, as shown in Fig. 3. These clamps are preferably suspended by their upper ends from the upper part of the woodsaturation tank by links e, which are herein shown as pivotally connected to the clamps and to ears depending from the inner face of the tank. These clamps are adapted to partially surround or encircle the body of wood on the car or other wood-carrier and are provided with suitable actuating means, shown in the present instance as ascrew plunger f, fitting loosely in a socket g, secured to the clamp and maintaininga freely-swinging connection between the clamps d and the actuating-plungers f. The plungers pass through a suitable gland and stuffing-box arrangement 71J and are shown as provided with handwheels 't'. Sets of these clamps and their actuating means are placed at intervals along the tank and serve when brought into action to very efficiently clamp the wood upon the wood-carrier, so that the said wood will not become displacedor folded up by the fireprooin g fluid when it enters, nor will the wood be clamped so firmly as to prevent the entry of the fluid into its porous spaces.
I am quite well aware that it has been heretofore proposed to thrust down a plunger upon the top of the pile of wood upon the car; but the structure which I describe herein is much superior and operatesin the best possible manner.
Having described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, 1s-
1. The combination of a wood-saturating tank, a wood-carrier adapted to freely move in the Y said tank, and pivotally mounted clamps having operating means therefor eX- tending outside of the Wood-saturation tank.
2. The combination of a closed Wood-saturation tank, a wood-carrier adapted to move freely in said tank, clamps adapted to partially surround the said wood and to embrace the same from opposite sides, and operating means extending outside of the wood-saturation tank for actuating the said clamps.
3. The combination of a wood-saturation tank, a car or wood-carrier adapted to move freely therein and a pluralityl of clamps pivotally suspended in the said tank and of such shape as t-o partially surround the Wood-car and operating means for the clamps extending outside of the woodfsaturation tank.
MAX BAOHERT.
