Be it known that I, GEORGE W. WELLS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Southbridge, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements 'in Eyeglasses, of which the following is a specification.

Myinvention relates to eyeglasses, and particularly to means for locking or holding the screw which secures the end of the spring and the nose-guard in the recessed end of the post of the frame to which the lens is secured. In the ordinary construction of eyeglasses the screw above referred to is apt to work loose.

The object of my invention is to provide means for locking or holding the fasteningscrew to prevent it from working loose; and my invention consists in certain novel features of construction of the means for locking or holding said screw, as will he hereinafter fully described.

Referring to the drawings, Figure lis a front view of a pair of eyeglasses embodying my i n1- provements. Fig. 2 is a front end View of the post and parts attached thereto looking in the direction of arrow ct, Eig. 3. Fig. 3 is a section on line 3 3, Fig. 2, looking in the direction of arrow b, same ligure. Fig. 4 corresponds to Fig. 2, but shows a modifiedl construction of the plate for locking the screw. Fig. 5 shows the locking-plate shown in Eig. 2 detached, and Fig. 6 shows the lockingplate shown in Fig. 4: detached. Figs. 2 to 6, inclusive, are on an enlarged scale.

In the accompanying drawings, i 4 are the lenses, 5 5 the lens-holding frames, provided with holding-lugs 6 6, between which the inner edge of the lens extends and is secured by ascrew 7 in the ordinary way. The frame 5 has the post 8 extending out therefrom. Said post 8 has its outer end recessed to receive the spring 9, which connects the two lenses, and the nose-guard arm l0', supporting the nose-guard 10 in the ordinary way.

The fastening-screw l1, which secures the spring 9 and the nose-guard l0 to the post 8, extends loosely through a hole in the end of the spring 9 and in the end of the nose-guard arm 10 and is screwed into a threaded hole in the recessed end of the postS in the usual way, as shown in Eig. 3.

The head of the fastening-screw 11 instead of being round, as in the ordinary construction, is made with straight edges, preferably with six straight edges, as shown; but there may be more or less than six straight edges, it' desired.

To hold or lock the fastening-screw 1l and prevent it from working loose, I provide a plate 12, having a centralopening 12, through which the shank of the screw extends and adapted to tit into the outer recessed end of the post 8, between the end of the nose-guard arm 10 and the head of the screw l1, as shown in Fig. 3. The plate l2 is preferably made with one or more extensions l2 on its edges to extend into notches in the side flanges 8' of the recessed end of the post 8, as shown in Fig. 2, and has also an extension 12"on one edge, which is adapted to be bent up to engage one of the straight edges on the head of the vfastening-screw Il, after the screw has been screwed into the post 8, to secure the parts together,as shown in the drawings.A By means of the extension 12 on the plate l2 and the straight edges on the head 'of the fasteningscrew ll the screw is held or locked and prevented from working loose.

In Figs. tand 6 I have shown a modified form of the plate 12. There are no side extensions to extend into the notches in the flanges 8' of the recessed end of the post 8, the plate 12 being held between the parallel flanges at the recessed eno' of the post 8, as shown in Fig. et.

It will be understood that the details of construction of my improvements may be varied, if desired, and they may be used on eyeglasses with rims or without rims. v

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In eyeglasses, the combination with the frame-post, having a recessed end, and the end of the spring and nose-guard fitting in said recessed end, of a fastening-screw having a head with straight edges, and a plate extending in the recessed end of the framepost, between the head of the fastening-screw, and the nose-guard, and having an extension thereon to engage one of the straight edges on the head of the fastening-screw, substantially as shown and described.

2. In eyeglasses, the combination with the IOO frame-post, having a recessed end, and the end of the spring and nose-guard fitting in said recessed end, of a fastening-screw having a. head with straight edges, and a plate extending inthe recessed end of the framepost, between the head of the fastening-screw,

and the nose-guard, and having one or more extensions to extend into notches in the flanges in the recessed end of the frame-post, and an extension to engage a stl-eight edge :o on the head of the fastening-screw, substantially as shown and described.
