Description
@uiten tste' stwt @fitte HENRY BEVIS, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELI, THOMAS H. FOULDS, AND W. D. DALTON, OFl THE SAME PLAGE.
Letters Patent No. 66,670, dated July 16, 1867.
TO WHOMV IT MAY CONOERN: f Be it known that I, HENRY DEVIS, of- Cincinnati,rHuInilton county, Ohio, have invented, Acertairrnewi an useful Improvements in Stenm-Generatorsgand I hereby declare the following to be a. full', clear, -and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, marking part ot' this specification.
My invention relatcs'to that class of steam-generators having en uutomntic circulation, and consists-in constructing the circulating tubos of different lengths and different diameters, the'tbes forl the supply or downward current being short, large in dia-meter, and furthest from the re; the tubes for the upward current sum-ll, nearest to the tire, and carried upward, so as to discharge their contents above the water line; andthe whole collection of tubes' connected at the bottom to :1n annular or other suirnbly-shaped water-chamber. My invention further consists in providing a suicient number of the fire-tubes for the upward current,'with elbows or returnbends at the top to decct the current and assist the circula-tion. i
The accompanying drawing is an u-xiel section of a boiler embodying my invention.
A is the tire-box, surrounded by an annular waiter-chamber, B. which receives .the entire Water supply for the boiler at a. l. C is the'steain-chamber, connected to `the water-chumber B bythe annularV rows ofcirculating tubes D D', E E; tubos D D beingl carried above the water line, und tubes E E endinglievel with the crownsheet F.` l 4 In the operation of the b oiler, the tubes D D', being of smaller dignneterland more exposed to the ire than the tubes E E', arapid automatic and uninterrupted circulation will take place', upward through tubes D D and downward though tubes E E.. To prevent a conflict of currents and for the purpose lof eifecting a. quick generation of steam on first lighting up the fire, I carry the tubes D D to n. point above the witter line. By this device the currents are lseparated completely, n-nd the steam, as fast as forined, Wil1 issue directly into the steamchamber, without having to pass through the body of the water on the crown-sheet I?.- To assist in circulation, when found necessary, I surmount some or allotl the innerl series of tubes D Dllwth downwardly-directed clbows or terminations G, to deflect the upward currents into the downward direction, and toward the outer and descending series of tubes.
I claim herein as new and of my inventiorn- The steam-chamber C and water-chamber B, connected by one or more annular series/ot' ascending-tubes or ducts D immediately surrounding the tire, and havingIdownwardly-dischargingterminations G abovethc crown-sheet, and by ono or more outer annular series of descending ductslE, having their inletsfush withtthe top of the crow'n-sheet, for the purpose set forth.
In testimony of which invention I hereunto set uiy hand. l
i' HENRY BEVIS.
