AWNING-FRAME HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0.666,694, dated January 29, 1901.

Be it known that 1, CHARLES H. PLANZ,J1., a citizen of the United States of America, and a resident of the city and county of Albany, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Awning-Frame Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to devices for supporting awning-frames; and the object of my invention is to provide a support for an awning-frame so constructed and connected up that the awning-frame may be easily raised or lowered and when in position on the holder the frame will be held positively and securely in connection therewith, avoiding all tendeucy to rattle. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accom-- panying drawings, in which Figure l is an elevation showing the position of the holder when the frame is lowered. Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the position of the holder when the frame is elevated. Fig. 3 is a plan of the rod A. Fig. 4 is an elevation of the holder B. Fig. 5 is a plan of the under side of the holder. Fig. 6 is an elevation of the holder with a modified form of catch K. Fig. 7 is a plan of the holder and said modified form of catch.

Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the several views.

I secure a rod A to the side of the building X in any suitable manner, upon which rod is adapted to reciprocate a holder B, which carries the awning-frame B, it being understood that there are usually at least two rods A and two holders B for the purpose of supporting a small awning adapted to shade a window, the number of rods and holders being, so far as my invention herein is concerned, immaterial. The holder B is slotted or bifurcated, allowing the holder to be moved upon the rod A from the horizontal position (shown in Fig. 1) to the vertical position, (shown in Fig. 2) and is provided with a cotter-pin b, which may be placed in position after the holder is mounted on the rod A and which will limit the rotative movement of the holder B on the rod A. In the holder B, I also arrange aslotted opening 0, adapted to engage with a lug d on the rod A when the holder is in a horizontal position, as shown in Fig. 1,

this for the purpose of locking the holder and preventing a rattling or jarring. I also preferably arrange at the bottom of the holder a threaded bolt E, adapted to pass through the slotted support L, also attached to the rod A beneath the holder B. On the bolt E, I place a thumb-nut M, by the operation of which the holder B may be drawn down tightly, preventing the lower portion of the awning from being raised by the wind and securing the holder against any possible displacement. On the other side of the holder B, I arrange an opening F, adapted to engage with a lug G on the side of the rod A, near the upper end of the rod, thus providing for locking the holder when the awning is raised, as shown in Fig. 2. The position of the cotter-pin b in the end of the holder Bis so arranged in reference to the lug G and opening F that they will bind the holder against the rod A and prevent any movement of the holder on the rod that would tend to cause a rattling.

I have considered the holder B as separable from the frame B. It is understood that the holder B may be formed integral with the frame B.

I have shown in Figs. 6 and 7 a modified form of fastener for the holder to be used in place of the threaded bolt E and thumb-nut lWl. The holder B is provided with a downwardly-extending plate N, in contact with which the one end of the shank O of the latch K comes when the latch is brought over the holder B, as shown in Figs. 6 and 7, said latch K being pivoted at 76 below the holder B to the rod A when the holder is in its horizontal position. The extension N forms a bearing for the end of the shank O and against which the end of the shank presses inits movement when the latch is brought over the holder and tends to bind the parts together, preventing rattling.

I do not wish to limit myself to any par ticular means for locking the holder, as many arrangements could be devised for performing the same result.

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a support for an awning-frame, a rod; a holder adapted to reciprocate thereon; a lug near each end of said rod, said holder provided with a slotted opening adapted to ensaid projection, with a thumb-screw adapted to engage with the saidbolt, substantially as described and for the purposes set forth.
