ALBERT DEVORE MAJOR, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
TAPE-LIN E CASE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,537, dated January 8, 1901.
Application filed November 1, 1899. Serial No. 735,482. (No model.)
To aZZ whom zit may concern:
Be it known that LALBERT DEVORE MAJOR, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful T ape-Line Case, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in tape-line or tape-measure cases which are entirely new and original, having many advantages over those now in use, inasmuch as they are cheaper, more durable, and easier to handie than most other cases. I attain these objects by the mechanisms shown in the accompanying drawings, similar letters referring to similar parts, in which Figure 1 shows a plan view of my tapemeasure case Fig.2,an elevation of the same; and Fig. 3, a section through the line 3 3 of Fig. 1, but with the tape omitted.
In the several views, A is the case proper, constructed of two similar shells at and b, clamped together at c, united forming three walls, the two similar upper and lower walls and the circumferential wall-d, e, and f, respectively.
B is a ring journaled in the case A to revolve about its center. This ring B is movably held in place by the flange 9 of the wall 01 and likewise by the flange h of the wall e, so that the tape D, attached thereto, can be unwound by pulling said tape and rewound by revolving the ring B in the opposite direction by means of the smaller ring O, attached thereto, or'other similar projection.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a hand-propelling-tape-measure case, the case proper A, the flange g, the flange h, the ring B and a radial projection from said ring B, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a hand-propelling-tape-measure case, the case proper A, the ring B, a finger-abutting projection C, and means to keep the said ring B in its place within the said case A, substantially as shown and described.
3. In a hand-winding tape-measure, the annular case having the unobstructed opening therethrough, and the hollow-reel bearing at the periphery of said opening, and having a finger propelling applier operatively held within the hollow of the reel, substantially as shown and described.
4. In a hand-winding tape-measure, the combination of the annular case, a hollow reel having bearings at itsperiphery in such case, and means within said bearings for the application of the finger to propel said reel, substantially as shown and described.
5. In a hand-propelling tape-measure, the combination of the case having an unobstructed opening therethrough with a reel having an opening .concentric with the one first named for the introduction of the finger in the said reel, and a radial projection extending from said reel serving as an abutment to the finger for propulsion.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
ALBERT DEVORE MAJOR.
