DUMPING-CAR.

To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES LETCHER HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Huddleston, in the county of Alleghany and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dumping-Cars; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in dumpingcars, and especially to means for operating the doors over the outlet-passage in the bottom of the car; and it consists in the provision of rotating doors which are held at an angle and adapted to travel upon inclined tracks, means being provided whereby said doors are raised and lowered on the inclined tracks and allowed to close by gravity.
To these ends and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists, further, in the novel construction, combination, and adaptation of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claims.
My invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form part of this application, and in which drawings similar letters of reference indicate lik-e parts throughout the several views, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a car, show'- ing my improved doors for regulating the outlet-passage from the dumping portion. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view showing the doors at their highestlimit or in open relation. Fig. 3 is a central longitudinal sectional detail view. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section through the car. Fig. 5 is an end view.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the body of a dumping-car, having an inclined and depressed portion A therein and an outlet-passage at the lower inclined end of said projecting portion. On either side of the car are secured the tracks B, which are angular and extend below the car. In order to brace said tracks and make the same more rigid, bracestrips C are fastened to the opposite faces of the car and at their lower ends to the apexes of said tracks. The doors D have trucks D made on their lower faces, which support the grooved wheels E, which are adaptedv to ride on said tracks at the angle shown. On the under face of each door is a grooved way F, and underneath said doors and adjacent to said grooved ways is an angle-rod G, the ends ot which are fastened to the loops K, which are rigidly held to the under faces of the inclined projecting portion of the car. As the doors are raised and lowered the grooved ways are adapted to slide on said inclined rod and be guided thereby. In the strips to which the ends of said angled rod are connected are mounted the pulleys M, over which the cords N pass, which cords are connected to the strips Q, which are connected to the outer or lower faces of the sliding doors.
Pivoted to the under face of the car are the levers O and P, and to the inner end of the lever O is connected a cord passing over a pulley, said cord being connected to one of the sliding doors of the car. The outer end of said lever O is pivoted to a link R, which has pivotal link connection with the main operating-lever S, which is pivoted to the side of the car, as at S. The leverP and link R have pivotal connection at the outer end of said lever P, and mounted on a pivot W on the bottom of the car is a lever J, which has link connections with the lever P and at its opposite end is `connected to a cord which passes over a roller and is connected at its opposite end to one of the rolling doors on the inclined projecting portion of the car. The lever S has an extended portion S2, having a loop which surrounds the lever S, said eX- .tended portion being provided to allow the doors to be operated at dierent locations above the body portion of the car.
From the foregoing it will be observed that as the operating-lever S is swung on its pivot in one direction the doors controlling the outlet-passage of the dumping-car will be raised to their highest limit and by a reverse movement of said lever the doors will be allowed to fall by gravity over the outlet-passage of the car, thus automatically closing the same.
Having thus described myinvention, what IOO I claim to be new, and desire lto secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a dumping-car, the body portion with hopper-bottom angle-tracks supported by the car, and projecting below the bottom thereof, trucks having wheels running on said tracks, doors secured to said trucks and designed to close over the outlet to said hopper-bottom,
and means for raising said doors, as set forth. i
2. In a dumping-car, the body portion with hopper-bottom, angled tracks secured to said car, and extending below the bottom thereof,
trucks running on said tracks, doors mounted n on said trucks, means for drawing the trucks up the inclined tracks, and a guiding mechanism for said doors, as set forth.
3. In combination with the car with hopper-bottoni, the angled tracks secured to the car and projecting below the bottom thereof,
the trucks and doors -mounted thereon, the angle guide-rod and grooved ways secured to said doors and designed to travel on said guide-rod, and means for raising the doors, as set forth.
4. In combination with the body of adumping-car having a hopper-bottom, the angletracks, the truck and doors, the angle guiderod, the grooved ways secured to said doors and working on said rod, the grooved Wheels at the ends of said guide-rod, the levers and link connections for raising said doors, as set forth. v
