HOT-WATER GENERATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,288, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed. June 6,1900. Serial No. 19,267. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that LFRANK VAN LIEW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Port Huron, in the county of St. Clair and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hot-Water Generators;
and I do declare the following to be a full,clear,-
and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a class of hot-water generators of the vertical-water-tu be type; and its objects are to diminish the consumption of fuel, to provide for better and more economical heating of the water, and a more perfect and continuous circulation of air through it.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in Which Figure 1 is a simple vertical section through the generator. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section of the same on the line m w of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the same on the line y y of Fig. 1. v
In the drawings, H denotes the outer shell or casing of the boiler, the lower end of which is riveted to an inwardly and upwardly extending truncated cone-shaped shell I, the shells H and I being connected at their top ends by a circular plate H.
J denotes an inner truncated cone-shaped shell closed at its upper end and connected at its lower edge to an annular plate J. K denotes a similar truncated cone-shaped shell of greater diameter than the cone Jand adapted to be placed over the cone J and which also has its lower edge connected to the annular plate J, the upper end of said cone K being closed by the annular plate K.
C denotes an annular series of inclined water-tubes opening at their upper ends into the space formed by the cone-shaped shell J and the shell K, the lower ends of said pipes 0 opening into the space formed by the outer shell II and the cone-shaped shell I.
B denotes the return-pipe from the radiators.
The space formed between the cones I and K serves as a gas and smoke chamber which conducts the products of combustion to a fine connected with the same at its upper end. The-space within the cone J being closed at its upper end will tend to collect the heat and hold the same, thereby heating the water surrounding said cone to a high degree.
The advantage gained by constructing a boiler in this manner is the conical shape of the interior shells, also the inclination of the tube 0, allowing the flame from the furnace to pass around the same and presenting a greater amount of heating-surface and requiring a much smaller amount of fuel to heat the water.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, the construction and operation of my heater will be readily understood, and a further description of the same is not deemed necessary.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a hot-water generator, the combination of an outer shell or casing, an inner tapering shell connected to the outer shell or casing to form in conjunction therewith a waterspace, two concentric tapering shells arranged within said inner shell and spaced apart one from the other and from the inner shell, the innermost one of the two concentric shells being closed at its upper end and having its lower end joined to the lower end of the outermost one of the two concentric shells, a grate arranged below the two concentric shells and within the outer shells, water-tubes surrounding said grate and communicating with the space between the two concentric shells, and outlet-pipes leading from the water-space between the two con centric shells and the space between the outer shell and the inner shell, substantially as set forth.
