SPECIFICATION-forming part of Letters Patent No. 665,104, dated January 1, 1901. Application filed April 18, 190. Seriell No. 13,334. (No model.)
T0 a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CELESTIA E. KERR, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Decatur, in the county of De Kalb and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Drawing and Measuring Instrument, of which the followingis a full, clear, and eX- act description.
This invention relates to an instrument for use in drawing, measuring, and working with various sorts of materials; and it comprises a scaled ruler, a T-square, a protractor, a compass, and other devices, as will fully appear hereinafter.
This specification is the disclosure of one form of the invention, while the claims define the actual scope thereof.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a front view of the invention with its parts extended. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 isa fragmentaryview of the lower end of the arm of the device. Fig. 5 is a fragmentary elevation of the instrument, and Fig. 6 is a fragmentary plan.
The main portion Aof the device comprises two parallel parts joined by a web 'at their outer edges. This part A of the instrument is beveled and graduated to form a ruler. The arm B is provided at its inner end with a pin and thumb-nut b, the pin being arranged to slide in a slot formed in one member of the main part or body7 A of the instrument, such slot comprising an arc-shaped portion aand a straight portion a. The arm B may therefore be placed in the position shown in Figs. l and 2, or by moving the pin b into the outer portion of the part a of the slot in the body A the arm B may be folded down parallel with the body A, between the two members thereof. The body A is provided with a hinged protractor C, situated at the middle thereof and capable of swinging into the position shown by full lines in Figs. l, 2, and 5 or into the position shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, in which posi tion the protractor is held against further downward movement by a bracket or brackets c, hingedly carried on the body A of the instrument. The body A of the instrument is provided at the side on which the protractor is carried with a cavity a2, (see Figs:
2 and 5,) in which the protractor C may be folded when not in use. The arm B may be p ivotally mounted on the body A of the instrument by means of a pin D, forming a pivot and carried by an arm d, whichis arranged to turn on a pin d', rigidly carried on the body A. The arm d is situated in a sec,-y tor-like cavity a3 in the body A, the pin d being situated at the lower end or point of the cavity. The pin d has a head d2, which is mounted to slide on and axially of the pin df, an expansive spring cl3 bearing between the pin and head to hold the arm cl normally inward. The arm may be moved into the po.
sition shown in Figs. l and 2, in which position the pin D will be inactivethat is to say, not engaged with the arm B. The body A is formed at the cavity as with an orifice a4, located centrally vof the protractor, through which orifice the pin D may be projected.v y The arm B is provided at its lower portion with an opening b', in which the pin D may be en gaged, so as to mount the arm B to swing, and thus work with the protractor. This pinD constitutes the pivot of the arm, and the pin b is arranged to move true in they arc-shaped portion d of the slot in the body A.
The arm B is provided with a disk E, which is sl-idable longitudinally of the arm in a slot therein. This disk is `provided with a dog e, adapted to engage ratchet-teeth b2 on the arm to hold the disk in the desired position. The disk E is formed with a central opening therein, into which the point of a pencil may be inserted, so that by swinging the arm B a circle may be described. The right -hand edge of the slot on the arm is in line with the' pivot D and pin h, and by moving a pencil along this edge a line may be struck radially of the protractor C, and it is by this arrangement that the protractor is operated. If desired, the arm B may be held rigidly by fastening the thumb-nut b.
The body A of the instrument carries hinged IOC into cavities a6, formed in the bodyA. When the ledges F are thrown into the position shown in Fig. 2, they may be engaged with the side edge of a table or di'awingboard, so as to facilitate using the instrument as a T- square. The same function may be performed by the protractor C when thrown to the position indicated by the dotted lilies in Fig. 2.
It will thus be seen that my invention combines a great variety of instruments for measuring and drawing purposes. By moving the arm B to the end of the part ct of the slot in the body A and fastening the arm by the thu mb-n utbtheinstrument may be converted into a square, and of course the arm B may 'be thrown to any inclination desired with respect to the body A, so as to measure various angles. By throwing the arm D to the position shown in Figs. l and 2 the arm B may be folded into the body A.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. A drawing and measuring instrument having a main portion formed of two parallel parts joined by a web, one of said parts being provided with a straight slot terminating at the middle of the main portion in an arcshaped slot, an arm, a removable pivot mounted in the arm at the middle portion of the Va support for the protractor removably holding the same at right angles to the plane of the arm, for the purpose specified.
3. A drawing and measuring instrument, having a main portion, an arm carried thereon, a hinged ledge carried by the main portion, and a hinged bracket mounted on the main portion adjacent to the ledge and serving to removably hold the same at right angles to the plane of the main portion, for the purpose specied, the main portion having cavities receiving the ledge and bracket when such parts are folded.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses. l
