JOHN PORSGH, OF ERIE, PENNSYLVANIA.
SMOKE-PRODUClNG MACHINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,894, dated January 1, 1901.
Application filed February 21, 1900. semi No.6,077- N mOdBL) To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN PORSCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erie, in the county of Erie and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Smoke-Producing Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to smoke-producing machines for testing piping and the like; and it consists in certain improvements in the construction thereof, as will be hereinafter fully described, and pointed outin the claims. ""The object of the invention is to produce smoke and to force the smoke produced into a pipe system to test the joints.
" The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, as follows:
Figure 1 shows a transverse section of the device on the line 1 l in Fig. 2. Fig. 2 shows a section of the device on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1.
A marks the chamber, which is inclosed by a double wall A, capable of holding a liquid. A bell 13 forms a cover for the chamber A, and its sides are arranged to fit into the double wall A and to be sealed by the liquid in the wall A. A spout a is provided for introducing the liquid into the wall A. An inletpipe 0 is arranged at the bottom of the charm her A and is provided with a check-valve c, which permits theinflow of air, but prevents an outflow from the chamber A. An outlet D extends, preferably, from about the middle of the chamber and is arranged with a fitting (Z, to which the pipe system to be tested may be connected. Arranged in the chamber A is a plunger E, having a cage E, in which waste saturated with oil or smoke-producing material is placed. A stem c'extends from the plunger E and is provided with the handle e, by which the plunger may be operated. The stem 6 passes through a stuffing-box b on the bell B. A pipe 0 preferably extends up a slight distance from the inlet to prevent the leaking of drippings from the waste.
To operate the machine, the waste is placed in the cage E and ignited, the bell is then put in place, thus closing the chamber A, and the handle e is reciprocated, thus operating the plunger E. This operates as a pump, drawing the air in at the inlet C and expelling the smoke produced by the waste through the pipe D. By forming the pump in the smokechamber A the device is made much more compact than is possible otherwise, and by reciprocating the plunger the seal remains unbroken and can be very conveniently arranged. By forming the waste-cage directly on the plunger and perforating this cage, so as to allow some circulation of air through it, air is forced through the entire body of Waste with each reciprocation of the plunger, or, in other words, some parts of the air is transferred from one side of the plunger to the opposite side, so that the plunger does not of course produce its full pumping action. This action tends to carry so much air through the waste as to cool it sufficiently to produce a cooler smoke than is now produced by machines of this character. To this end I have preferably placed the outlet-pipe D near the middle of the chamber A, so that a considerable part of the movement of the plunger E simply effects a movement of air through the waste.
Extending upwardly from the pipe D is a chamber (1, in which is a small gasometer D. This indicates the pressure on the pipe system. The bell B is preferably so weighted by a weight B that the bell is not raised in any way by the pressure of air in the chamber or by the operation of the stem through it.
What I claim as new is 1. In a smoke-producing device for testing pipe systems, the combination of a smokeeham ber provided with a double wall adapted to hold the liquid; a cover or bell arranged to form a seal with said walls; an outlet from said chamber; an inlet thereto; a pump-plunger in said chamber, said plunger being independent of the bell or cover; and means for operating said plunger.
2. In a smoke-producing device for testing pipe systems, the combination of a smokechamber; means for supporting a smoke ma terial in said chamber; means for sealing the chamber; an outlet and inlet therefrom and thereto; a pump-plunger in said chamber, said plunger being independent of the sealing means; and means for operating said plunger.
3. In a smoke-producing device for testing pipe systems, the combination of a smokechamber; an outlet and inlet therefrom and thereto; means for sealing said chamber; a pump-plunger in said chamber, means for supporting a smoke material carried by said plunger; and means for reciprocating said plunger.
4. In a smoke-producing device for testing pipe systems, the combination of a smokechamber; an outlet and inlet therefrom and thereto; means for sealing said chamber; a pump-plunger having openings therethrough to allow passage of air from one side to the opposite; means for supporting a smoke-producing material carried by said plunger in the path of the movement of air through the plunger.
5. In a smoke-producing device for testing pipe systems, the combination of a smokechamber; an outlet and inlet therefrom and thereto, said outlet being located intermediate to the ends of the chamber; means for sealing said chamber; a pump-plunger hav- V ing openings therethrough to allow the passage of air from one side to the opposite; means for supporting a smoke-producing ma; terial carried by said plunger in the path of the movement of air through the plunger.
6. In a smoke-producing device for testing pipe systems the combination of the chamber, A, having the double wall, A, thereon; the bell, B, arranged to fit into the double wall, A; the inlet, 0, provided with a checkvalve, 0; the outlet, D, from the chamber, A; the plunger, E, arranged in the chamber, A; the cage, E, carried by the plunger, E, and arranged to support the smoke-producing material; and the stem, 2, secured to said plunger and extending out of said chamber.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN PORSOH.
