UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE E. THOMAS, OF HARTFORD, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE PER- KINS ELECTRIC SWITCH MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
ELECTRICAL-SWITCH GAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 664,189, dated December 18, 1900. Application filed August 27, 1900. Serial No. 28,253. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. THOMAS, a citizen of the United'States of America, residing in Hartford, in the county of Hartford,
State of Connecticut, have invented Improvements in Electrical-Switch Caps, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a convenient and simple construction of insu- IO lating-lining for the metal caps of electrical switches and other articles. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the several parts before they are assembled. Fig. 2 is a corresponding view after the parts have been put together, and Fig. 8 is an inner face view of the lined cap.
A is the spun-metal cap of an electrical switch, through the central opening CL of which the spindle of the switch is to pass. The insulating-lining is made from sheets of flexible hard fiber or other such material and is preferably in two main parts, a dislclike part B to line the top of the cap and a band C to line its cylindrical walls. The disk B has a central opening Z) of somewhat smaller diameter than the hole a in the cap and preferably has around the margin a flaring edge 17. I clamp this disk to the cap by means of an eyelet D, inserted through the central spindle-opening 00. An insulating-Washer d is preferably inserted under the top flange of the eyelet. The hole in this washer, like the hole in the disk B, is slightly smaller in di- 5 ameter than the hole in the metallic cap, so
that when the eyelet is pressed up the insulating-Washer and the insulating-lining will serve to keep the eyelet free from contact with the metallic cap.
The insulating-band C for lining the walls of the cap has at its upper edge a flange c to fit over and take behind the edge of the disk B, so that thereby the lining-band C will be held in place when the parts have been put together. The upper edge of the cap is curved or beveled at a, and the flares b and c on the two parts of the lining are set at a corresponding angle.
1 claim as my invention- 1. The combination of the metallic cap of an electrical switch or similar article having a central opening for aspindle with an insulating-lining and an eyelet fitted to said central opening to secure the lining to the cap, substantially as described.
2. The combination of the metallic cap of an electrical switch or similar article having a central opening for a spindle with an insulating-lining and an insulating-washer both having openings of less diameter than that on the cap and an eyelet passing through said openings and securing the said insulating parts to the cap, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the metallic cap of an electrical switch or similar article with a lining-disk and means for securing it to the top of the cap and a separate lining-band for the walls of the cap, said lining-band having a flange to engage behind the edge of the lining-disk, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE E. THOMAS.
