Thus the piston-valve E acts automatically to allow alternate induction and exhaust of steam to and from the piston-cylinder through the same passages and is itself acted on by live steam, and thereby shifted at each half-reciprocation ofthe piston A, so as to cut 01T steam at the right moment.
The steam which acts on and actuates the valve A may be allowed to exhaust through the main passages 5 5, by which it entered the cylinder B; but to make sure provision for thorough exhaust ports 10, Figs. l and 2, are formed in the valve-seat, the same extending horizontally to connect with the main exhaust cavities or grooves 9. The said ports are located such distance from the ends ofthe valve-chamber that the valve E uncovers and opens them alternately as it reaches the limit of its stroke.
To prevent the valve E turning or rotating about its axis, I provide a rectilinear guide for the same by means of a screw l1, Fig. 2, which passes through the side of the steamchest D, its smooth or threadless end projecting into a longitudinal slot 12, Fig. l, in the side and central portion of the valve.
In case the engine is used vertically I provide means for counterbalancing the weight of the valve, so that it may not drop prematurely by gravity, and for this purpose the valve E may have a rod or small stem projectcd through the upper end of the steamchest and working in a stuing-box having the usual form of gland, by which friction on the said stem may be regulated as required to overcome the eect of gravity.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination with a cylinder-piston, and steam-chest and intermediate exhaustpassages ot` a valve adapted to reciprocate in the steam-chest, and having a central cham- (S-Lilli ber provided with an induction-port on one` side and two eduction-ports on the other, and also with grooves or exhaust-ports located laterally from said chamber, passages each com steam-chest and valve having a central portedcham ber and lateral exhaust-spaces, of combined induction and exhaust passages, exhaust-ports that communicate with the latter as the valve reciprocates, two small passages conducting livey steam to ends of steamchest, and supplemental exhaust-ports 10, which extend from the spaces formed alternately at ends of valve-chamber to the main exhaust-passages, as shown and described.
3. The valve and steam-chest having a flat base provided with central and end ports and a curved exhaustpassage 9, formed as a groove or depression in said base, and the piston and cylinder having a flat top provided with the steam-passages 5, 5a, 9, and 8, 8*, a portion of the latter being formed as grooves extended in the flat top, the said passages bcing arranged to coincide and communicate with those of the steam-chest base, substantially as shown and described.
4. The combination, with the steam-chest having a cylindrical chamber,of a cylindrical valve, and a lateral guide fixed on the steamchest the same working in a guide-cavity in the valve to prevent rotation, substantially as shown and described.
