JOHN O. SLOAN, OF INDIANAPOLIS, INDIANA.
FARE-REGISTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 664,103, dated December 18, 1900.
Application filed April 2, 1900. Serial No. 11,051. tNo model.)
To all whom, it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN O. SLOAN, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Fare-Register, of which the following is a specification.
The object of myinvention is to produce a convenient and simple fare register and receiver which can besuspended from the shoulders or from a belt, but can be removed there from at a moments notice, so as to be presented by the conductor to the passenger for the reception of a fare, to provide a registering device having a minimum number of parts, and to provide a receiver the opening for which is controlled by the same apparatus controlling the recorder. I
My invention primarily consists of a conveniently-shaped receptacle preferably divided into two compartments, one adaptedto receive the fares collected and the other containing the registering mechanism. The upper end of the receiving-compartment is pro vided with a slotted opening which is normally closed by a slide which is in operating connection with the registering apparatus. This slide is timed with the registering mechanism so that when a fare is deposited by a passenger the conductorby pressing a button first records the fare and then by a continued pressure the slide is opened and an alarm is sounded, notifying the passenger that the fare has been received and recorded.
The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a perspective View of one form of support. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the de Vice with the end plate removed. Fig. 4: is a side elevation with one side cut away and showing the parts in normal position. Fig. 5 is a similar View showing the parts in the position they occupy after registering.
In the drawings, 1 indicates the receptacle,
which maybe of any convenient form. This receptacle is partitioned into compartments 2 and 3, the former of which contains the registering and recording apparatus. A rockshaft 4 extends transversely across the compartment and carries an arm 5, provided with a slotted end 6, which takes over a pin 7, carried bythe operating-lever of any well-known form of registering device 8, located in the upper part of said compartment, so that the line of figures showing the number recorded may be seen.
I have shown one form of register; but this is not essential, as any well-known form may be used. An arm or lever 9, mounted on rockshaft 4, is provided with an end 10, which engages with a projection 11, carried by a sliding plate 12, which is adapted to normally close the receiving-slot 13, leading into compartment 3. The connection between this sliding plate and lever is shown in the drawings as being a slot-and-pin connection; but this can be connected by means of any desired form without deviating from the spirit of my invention. Mounted on the rock-shaft 4 is a third lever 14., provided with a hinged end 15, which engages a bell-tapping lever 16, carrying a tapper 17, which strikes a bell 18. WVhen rock-shaft a is moved, the levers are so timed that the registering apparatus will be first actuated, the sliding plate 12 will then uncover opening 13, and the bell will then be sounded. I have shown one form for actuating this rock-shaft consisting of an arm 19, carried by said rock-shaft and slotted to take over a pin 20, carried by a sliding bar 21, which projects through the receptacle and carries atits end a finger-button 22. The parts are all returned to their normal position by means of a spring 23, interposed between a stationary projection 24: and a-projection 25 on sliding bar 12. I prefer to secure all parts to the removableitop of the casing. Opening 13 is provided with a flaring mouthpiece having glass or transparent sides 27, so that the coin or ticket fare deposited can be readily seen from all sides. A T-head button or boss 28, secured to the register 1, is adapted to slip into a flaring slotted support 29, capable of being suspended from the shoulders or from a belt. This construction provides an absolute and positive support for the register, but still have it so that it can be instantly and easily removed. I also provide a handle 30 for handling the device when not suspended from its support. I also provide a flanged guide conductor may carry.
side of receptacle 1 is provided with a locked money-front 32, which can be opened to re move the fares.
I claim as my invention 1. In a couductors fare-register, the combination with a portable receptacle provided with a suitable handle, of a removable cover therefor, a guide carried by said cover havingaslot therethrough and adapted to receive and retain a fare, a slide mounted upon said cover beneath said guide, a registering mechanism also mounted upon said cover, an opcrating-lever mounted upon said cover, intermediate connections between said lever, registering mechanism and slide, a push mounted upon said receptacle adjacent said handle, and a detachable connection between said operating-lever and push, all of said parts projecting from the side of said cover so as to be easily accessible from the sides when the said cover is removed.
2. In a conductors fare-register, the combination with a portable receptacle provided with a suitable handle, of a guide leading into said receptacle and adapted to receive and retain a fare, a slide adapted to normally close said guide, a registering mechanism, a bell-hammer, a bell, a rock-shaft, arms carried by said rock-shaft for engaging and operating the registering mechanism, the slide and the hammer in succession in the order named, and an operating-lever for rocking said shaft, all of said parts projecting from the side of said cover so as to be easily accessible from the sides when the said cover is removed.
3. In a conductors fare-register, the combination with a portable receptacle provided with a suitable handle, of a removable cover therefor, a guide carried by said cover and leading therethrough, said guide being adapt ed to receive and retain a fare, a slide mounted on said cover and arranged to normally cover said guide, a registering mechanism also mounted on said cover, a bell-hammer pivotally mounted on said cover, a rock-shaft carried by said cover, arms carried by said rock-shaft and engaging the registering mechanism, a slide, and a bell-hammer, a push carried by said receptacle adjacent said handle, intermediate connections between said push and rock-shaft, and a bell mounted in posi-
