IMPROVEMENT IN BALING-PRESS.
T0 ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.
Bc it known that I, WILLIAM B. SMITH, of Aherdeciwin the county 'of Ohio, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and improved Daling-Press; and I do hereby declare that' the following is a full, clear, and. exact descriptionl thereof, which will enable lthose skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure l representsa plan or top View of my improved baling-press.
Figure 2, a sectional elevation, the plane of section being indicated by the line z x, iig. 1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal section taken through the line y y, ig.,2.
Figure 4 is a portion of a side elevation partly in section.
4liigure 5 is a `horizontal section taken through the line z z, fig. 2. i

This invention relates to a baling-press of that class in which thc hay, cotton, or other article to be baled is held in place by a follower while itis being operated upon by a beater, both the follower and beater moving in a horizontal direction. -The invention consists, first, in a new device for operating and releasing the follower; second, in a new arrangement for operating the beater, which is done by attaching the `beater to a weighted rocking-frame and winding a rope attached to the said frame around a capstan, whereby the beater is drawn ing the rocking-frame from the bapstan.
The press A, which consists of the follower B, the beater C, thc stationary side walls D andfD, and the cover E, is firmly secured to a wooden bed-piece, F. Access to the press is had through' the doors c in the cover and d in the side D. Through these doors the hay, cotton, hemp, or other article which is to Vbe baled is placed Within the press. The follower B is connected to a long lever, G, by links b '6. The leverG swings on the pin g, as seen in 6g. 1. To the other end of the lever are attached the ropes gl and g2'. `The rope g1 is secured to the lever by means of staples, or other devices, and is then passed over a pulley, f,at the rear, and is then attached to a drum,f, which plays loosely around the shaft of` the capstan H. The ropc gl, asis thus seen,`
will, when wound around th drum j, draw. the follower B backl from the hay, while the ropeg, which is attached to the bed-plate Fin front of the lever, and passed over a pulley, g, onthe lever, and wound around a drum,f2, on the` capstan, will, when wound up, press the follower against the-hay. The drumsj'1 andf2, bo'th of which play loose around the shaft of the capstan, are operated only when thrown in gear with the'windlass 7i by means of, a clutch, It. The drumsfl andf2 are provided with flanges at their top and bottom, their respective bottom and top flanges are made in the shape of cams, as seen in.g. 3. The clutch L, when brought into contact with either of these cams, throws the drum, of which the lcam is part,`into gear, whereby the follower is operated in the desired direction. The beater C is connected by means of alink, c, to the triangular rocking-frame I. The latter swings on pins z', and is held by them to the stationary frame K. A rope, z", which is attached to the upper swinging end of the rocking-frame, passes over pulleys z', and is then attached to a collar, l, which plays loosely around the upper part of the capstan H. The collar Zis provided with a small projection, Z, and is operated by apcatch or pawl, c,`which is pivoted to a flange, K', of the capstan. This catch is heaviest below its fulcrum, so that it will always hang down4 vertically by its own accord; When the capstan is turned by the power applied to the lever L, the said catcli will come in contact with the projection Z on the collar Z, andpush the same around, thereby winding up the cord'z" and drawing the beater h acl from thc hay. The lower end of.
the pawl K will then come in contact with the incline m, and will be thrown out of connection with the collar I, when the beater C will be vehemently thrown against the hay by means of a weight, M, attached tothe rockingframe, (seen in fig. 2.) When the hay is pressed enough the beater is secured in place by two catches d fitting into appropriate notches in the sides of`thebeater.
With thispress I can press hay, hemp, and other articlesV with a smaller number of revolutions of the windlass than could heretofore ,be done. Furthermore, I combine, by means of the weight' on the rocking-frame, the advantages of horizontal'and vertical presses, and I save much labor by being enabled to place my Vpress down upon the ground. whereby the hay need not be thrown to a height of from four to five/feet into the press.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patentp 1. The arrangement of the drums fl andfz, clutch h', ropes g and g", pulleysf and g3, lever-G, and links b b, for the purpose of operating the follower B, substantially as and in themrmner herein shown and described:
2. 'I claim the arrangement of the collar z', rope i', pulleys 1'", rocking-frame I, weight M, and linkc, for the purpose of operating the beater C, substantially in the manner herein shown and described.
3. .I claim the combination of the collar l, projection Z', and catch K with the incline m, substantially in the .manner and for the purpose herein shown and described.
WILLIAM B. SMITH.
