JOHN H. GOVE, OF SAN FRANCISCO, CALIFORNIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN HAY-PRESSES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 27,361, dated March G, 1860.
.To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN H. GovE, of the city and county of San Francisco and State of California, have invented a new and Improved .Press for Baling Hay, Wool, and other Materials, which I call Goves Improved Hay- Press, and I do hereby declare-that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation ofthe same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making a part of this specification, in which Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross-section. Fig. 3 is a front View. Fig. 4 is a rear view. Fig. 5 is a view from underneath the press. Fig. 6 is the top of the press. Fig. 7 is a longitudinal vertical section of the box, showing the reel and cords. Fig. 8 is the reel. Fig. 9 is a view of a portion of the apparatus, showing the catch-spring and the mode of operating the same.
A is a frame of wood, upon which is builta box, B, with doors or movable ends O, and a movable top, D.
E is a follower or movable bottom.
F F are levers or arms connected by crossbars H I-I and H -H, and are attached at one end to the follower E by journals working in boxes G G. The ends of the lower set of crossbars, H H, have journals turned upon them, so that they may traverse with ease under and along the cross-bars T T of the frame A.
K K are bars of iron or other metal attached to the frame A, upon which traverse the grooved rollers I I, which turn loosely upon the connectingbars H H. The frame may be stationary or placed upon wheels, as shown in the drawings. To the axle b of the hind wheels, or, in case of a stationary, to a proper shaft, is attached a lbevel-gear wheel, d, or endless screw, which works in a gear-wheel, ye, on a shaft, a, placed at right angles with the axle b or drivingshaft.

g is a shaft attached to the under part of 'the frame A, immediately in front of the box B, with a crank, p. Upon this shaft is abevelgear wheel, h, working in another wheel, t'.
7' is a ratchet-wheel upon the shaft a.
7c is a pawl and lever working in the ratchet wheel j.
q is a clutch to throw the wheel d in and out of gear at will by the lever m or by the action of the machine, as hereinafter shown. The lever m has an arm or projection, as shown at n, by which andthe catch-spring o the machine is kept in gear. The journal of one of the connecting bars H traverses between ythe spring O and the cross-bar T, as shown in Fig. 9. To both the front and rear end of the followerE is attached a sliding bar, r,with hooks s s, roller t, and spring fu.
L isa reel divided into equal portions by disks, upon which cords R R or wires are to be reeled.
w is a conical pulley on the shaft of the reel.
y is a corresponding conical pulley on the driving axle or shaft to be connected by a band. The hinder or driving wheels are to have projections across the face of the tires, as shown at w w.

N is a platform for the person filling the press to stand upon.
U U are hooks upon the back end of the box.
Mode of operation: To work the press, let the follower be raised nearly to a level with the platform N. The ends of the cords or wires R R are to be taken from the reel and passed through the openings in the top of the box D, thence down the inside of the front end of the box and along the grooves of the follower and under the hooks s s, passed through openings in the rear ofthe box, and looped over the hooks U U. The pawl is then detached from the ratchet and the follower lowered by means of the crank p, the hooks s s keeping the cords or wires in place. The box is then to beiilled withY hay or other material to be pressed, the top securely fastened down, and the pawl thrown into connection with the ratchet. The axle b or shaft is put in motion by propelling the carriage upon the ground, (or, in a stationary press', by any known mechanical device,) and by means of the gearing puts in motion the center shaft, a, winding the ropes c upon said shaft, gradually drawing the arms H H toward the center, bringing them to a perpendicular position, thereby raising the elevator, consequently compressing the contents of the box B. The journal of one of the arms H', at same time passing along the upper side of the catch-spring o,throws the catch These wheels are to run loose' upon the axle or be made to turn with it by 1 b with the shaft a.

The cords or Wires are then to be cut off a proper length, and the ends passed through the top of the box, as shown by R', and, through the openings in the rear end, passed through the loops, (see Fig. 7,) drawn tight, and securely fastened. Either the front or back end of the box is then to be removed and the bale taken from the box, the follower placed in position, as at first, and the Work commences again.
I do not claim the method of gearing by means of the axle of a carriage or other shafting.
What I claim, and for which I desire Letters Patent toissue, is-

2. rIhe arm n of lever m., combined with catch-spring o, as arranged With cross-bar H, for the purpose of automatically disconnecting the pressinggear at the proper time, as set forth.
- 3. The sliding bar r, with the hooks s s, roller t, and spring o, for the purpose of releasing the rope or Wire, as set forth.
4. The combination of the shaft a, chains or ropes C C, and arms or levers F F, when operatedv by the axle of a carriage, substantially as described, and for the uses and purposes as set forth. i
