To all whom it may concern:

Be it known thatI, ARTHUR OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Helena, county of Lewis and Clarke,

5 State of Montana, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sanitary Appliances, of which the following is a specification.

Various kinds of catch-basins and various kinds of traps have been invented and are more or less in use; but in all of them the method of attachment to the fixture and the general construction are so complicated as to make them both expensive to manufacture I and cumbersome in size and such as to render the act of cleaning them both difficult and disagreeable.

My invention supplies in three main pieces a perfect trap and catch-basin combined, simple in construction, cheap, durable, and easy to be cleaned.

It consists of a basin, alid and a short trappipe, with the necessary connections with the fixture and the discharge-pipe.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is' a longitudinal section; Fig. 2, aplan; Fig. 3, a longitudinal vertical section in line as m of Fig. 2, and Fig. at a transverse vertical section in line z z of Fig. 2.

A is the fixture, having the flanged ribs 0. a and threaded at the vent.

B is the catch-basin, having the upper edge of each side turned over to form the flange b and having a discharge-pipe 0, opening from the bottom, and a partition D across the bottom. F is the lid to this basin, having the projecting edges ff and the deep rim n and 40 the depressed collar 8.

E is the trap-pipe, made heavier at its upper end 6 and also threaded upon the outside at this part at t, and having the cross-bars g.

G is the waste-pipe, having the discharge 9 5 and the back vent g, and threaded at h to receive the nut H.

J is a rubber gasket, as is also Z.

K is a screen.

Having thus described the various parts,the

construction and operation are readily seen.

The fixtures being provided with the ribs or 0., either by having them cast integrally therewith, as shown in the drawings, or when not so made by attaching them in any suitable manner, the catch-basin B is pushed to its place, the flanges b b sliding upon these flanges a a. The gasket Z is adjusted and the trappipe is screwed home, securing this joint and also pressing the lid F closely upon the edges of the basin all around. The nut H and the gasket J on the discharge-pipe 0 form an extension-joint with the waste-pipe G, which is secured by a turn or two of the nut H.

The process of emptying and cleansing this combined trap and catch-basin is very simple and convenient. Removing the screen K, the trap-pipe E is quickly unscrewed and removed. A turn or two of the nut H releases the eXtension-joint,with the waste-pipe G, and the catch-basin B is then pulled out and away, the lid F is taken off, and all parts are then open to thorough and perfect cleansing. In cases of large fixtures with correspondinglylarge catch-basins the latter may be mounted on wheelsinstead of being supported as shown in the drawings.

In this combined trap and catch-basin I introduce the new feature of the removable lid with the deep rim shutting down upon the inside of the basin below the water-line, thus forming, with the trap-pipe, a perfect trap against the escape of the sewer-gas. The partition D holds back such heavy material as gets through the screen from passing on into the discharge-pipe, and also gives the water an upward flow, giving the grease and light material a better opportunity to rise to the surface in the basin. The opening of the discharge-pipe being at the bottom, this grease and material on the surface are undis- 9o turbed. The upturn of the discharge-pipe places the real outlet above the level of the bottom of the trap-pipe and the lower edge of the lid-rim, thus sealing against sewer-gas, as in any trap, but with the least possible expenditure of space. I

I do not confine myself to the particular means described of attaching the basin to the fixture and to the Waste-pipe, but they are believed to be the most convenient. 10o

Having thus described myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. In a sanitary appliance the combination with a fixture of a catch-basin having a discharge-pipe and removably supported upon the fixture a lid for sealing the basin a removable trap-pipe attached tight to the fixture fitted tight through the lid and extending into the basin and means for connecting the catch-basin to the fixture and to the wastepipe, substantially as described.

2. In a sanitary appliance the combination with a fixture of a removablecatch-basin having a discharge-pipe thereon, a removable trap-pipe attached to the fixture and extending into the catch-basin, a lid having a deeprim flange extending below the level of the discharge-pipe aperture and adapted to receive the trap-pipe and means for attaching the catch-basin and trap-pipe to the fixture, substantially as described.

3. In a sanitary appliance the combination with a fixture of a catch-basin removably secured thereto having a discharge-pipe at one end thereof and a low partition on the bottom thereof, a lid having a deep-rim flange extending below the discharge-pipe aperture, and a trap-pipe attached to the fixture and extending through the lid and into the catchbasin below the level of the discharge-pipe aperture substantially as described.

4. In a sanitary appliance, the combination with a fixture, of a removable catch-basin a lid having a rim-flange fittinginto the basin,

means for holding the basin closely under the fixture, and a removable trap-pipe screwing into the fixture and bearing upon the lid, substantially as described.

5. In a sanitary appliance, the combination with a fixture having flange-ribs upon the under side thereof, a catch-basin having a discharge-pipe at one end and adapted to slide upon the flange-ribs of the fixture a waste-pipe and means for connecting the dischargepipe and waste-pipe substantially as described.
