Be it known that I, ELI S. KNIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at McCloud, in the county of Siskiyou and State of California, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulley-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in snatch or pulley blocks, having for its object to provide a simple, light, and effective block which may be cheaply manufactured and one possessing the elements of strength and durability and which is adapted to permit a rope to be inserted laterally therein.

With this object in view the invent-ion consists in the novel construction and arrange ment, of parts, hereinafter more particularly described.

In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and in which like characters of reference designate corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a side elevation of Aa snatehblock embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the opposite side thereof. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view, and Figs. 4 and 5 views illustrating the blanks out of which the sides of the block are formed..

Referring more particularly to the drawings, A B designate opposite sides or cheekpieces of the block, respectively, formed, pret'- erably, of plate metal and securedtogether at their lower ends by means of bolts or rivets 1 passing through said cheek pieces and through a spacing-piece 2, which is interposed between said cheek-pieces and adapted to hold the same separated. The cheekpiece A is preferably blanked out of a plate of metal, as shown in Fig. 4, and is provided with a tongue 5, at the intersection of which and the main body of the blank is formed a slot 6, In practice this tongue 5 is folded over to form a socket 7 at the upper edge of the cheek-piece and is then bent to lay flat against the outer face thereof, being held in place by means of rivets 8 or other suitable means. Within the slot 6 is received one end of a combined rope-guard and latch-bar 9, formed with an opening, through which and the socket 7 passes a pivot-pin 10, by means of which the latch-bar and cheek-piece A are hinged together. latch-bar 9 is formed with a recess 12 for reception of one edge of a slotted latch-link 13, and intermediate its ends the said bar is connected to a hook la, swiveled thereto .and by means of which the block is attached to a stationary support. The cheek-piece B is like# wise formed of a blank, having a tongue I5 at its upper edge7 which is bent over to form a socket and then pressed into close contact with the outer face of the main body of the blank, where it is held preferably by means of rivets.

The latch-link 13 is preferably blanked out ofV plate metal and formed with a slot 18, the blank being doubled upon itself and formed with a socket 19, and through said socket and the socket of the cheek-piece B passes a pivotpin 20, which secures the latch-link and cheekpiece together, forming a hinged connection between the same. Normally the latch-link is in alinement with the cheek-piece B and constitutes part of the side of the block, said link being held in such position by means of the latch-bar 9, which projects through the slot 18 and receives the upper edge thereof in its recess 12. Intermediate the cheek-pieces A B is a sheave or pulley C, journaled loosely `upon a detachable shaft or spindle 19, ex-

tending transversely across the block through openings in the sides of the cheek-pieces and the tongues 5 and l5 thereof. Preferably the shaft is formed with a head at one end, as shown, and at its opposite end with an opening for reception of a pin or key 22, by means of which it is locked in place. The sheave may be formed of'either wood or metal and, as usual, is provided with a peripheralgroove having side tianges 23, the edges of which eX- tend substantially'to the top of the cheekpiece B in the plane of the hinged connection between the same and the latch-lin k. As thus constructed it will be obvious that by swinging the latch-link 13 open to the position shown in dotted lines, Fig. 3, a rope may be readily inserted into the block to engage the sheave thereof without requiring any material slackening of the rope.

It has been found in practice, especially in dragging heavy loads along the ground, in which case the blocks assume a horizontal position, that the rope or line often slips from engagement With the groove of the sheave IOO and'draws against one of the inner faces of the cheek-pieces of the block, thereby outting the rope. In the present construction, however, the latch-bar 9 is arranged in such close relation to the periphery of the sheave as to act as aguard and prevent the rope from becoming disengaged therewith.

Without limiting myself to the precise oonstruction and arrangement of the parts shown and described, since it will be obvious that modifications may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of my invention.

What I claim is- A snatch-block comprising t-Wo separated cheek-pieces, each consisting of a' sheet of metal having a relatively wide portion forming the Cheek proper and a relatively narrow tongue, the latter being doubled upon itself and secured to the Cheek portion and so shaped as to form a socket at its bend, a latch pivot# ally secured to one of the cheek-pieces by a pin passing;r therethrough and through the socket of the cheek-piece, said latch-block having a hook swiveled thereto, a latch-link secured to the second Cheek-piece by a pivotpin passing therethrough and through the socket of the cheek-piece the said latch-link being adapted for engagement with the latohblock, and a sheave rotatably supported intermediate the cheek-pieces, substantially as described.
