To all whom lit may concern:

Be it known that I, JosEPH W. Noncnoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lockport, in the county of Niagara and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pulley-Blocks, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in pulley-blocks for use ou ships and for other purposes.

The invention consists in a novel construction of the frame of the pulley-block and the sheave-pulley, and the improvements will be fully hereinafter described in detail, and pointed out in the claims.

This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l represents a side elevation ofmy pulley-block. Fig. 2 is a section in theplane w Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a section in the vplane y y, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a face view of the sheave.

In the drawings, the letters A A designate the metallic frames, which are of skeleton form.

B B are the cheeks, which iit into rims a a, formed on the metallic frames and cast solid with the same. The skeleton metallic frames are arranged upon the outside faces of the wooden cheek-pieces and the inwardly-projecting rims extend over the outer marginal edges of the cheeks and hug the same closely, so that said cheeks are prevented from splitting. In the inner faces of the cheeks are formed recesses for the reception of metallic strips O O. `The cheeks B B and the frames A A are secured together by end pieces, D, which are cast solid with pins d d, that project transversely through the cheeks and frames and are riveted on the outside. however, rivets may be used which extend transversely through the frames and the cheeks and through holes formed for their passage in the end pieces. In thecentral portion of the skeleton -frames and in the cheeks and the straps O O are formed holes, which form the bearings for the center pin, c, Von which is mounted a sheave, E. The end pieces serve to support the hook F and' the becket G.

The sheave E consists of a metallic rim, d', the inner periphery of which is slightly taperin goutward from the middle, (see Fig. 2,) While Instead of these pins,

its outer periphery1 forms a groove, e, for the reception ot' the rope. Into the interior of the rim d rare fitted two Wooden disks, f f, and on the outer surface of each of these disks is placed a metallic strap, g, which extends diametricallyacross, so that its ends bear against the inner periphery of the rim. Through each of these straps and through the wooden disks extends two rivets, h h h h', which are riveted on both ends, so that the straps and the disks are firmly connected to each other. From one of the straps projects a hub, fi, through the wooden disks and through the other strap, and this hub 'is bored out to receive the center pin. From the inner tapering surfaces of the rim projects a rib, j, (one or more,) which engages with a notch (one or more) in the wooden disks, so as to prevent them from turning in the metallic rim.

By these means a pulley-block is obtained which is extremely iirm and durable, and which can be made at a comparatively small expense.

I do not claim, broadly, in this application for a patent the combination of metallic frames with the cheeks of a pulley-block, such frames forming the subject-matter of a prior application for a patent.

What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

l. A pulley-block embodying in its construction wooden cheek-pieces and metallic frames arranged on the outside faces of the wooden cheeks, and each constructed with inwardlyprojecting rimsat their outer edges, which embrace the outer margins of the wooden cheeks, said metal frames and wooden cheeks being connected together by end pieces interposed between the cheeks and transverse pins passing throughthe cheeks and the metal frames,

all substantially as described.

2. The combination of thernetallic frames arranged on the outside faces of the Wooden cheekpieces, and each constructed with in- Wardly projecting rims at their cuter edges, which embrace the outer margins ofthe cheeks, with end pieces interposed between the wooden cheeks, and each provided at its opposite sides with attached lateral pins projecting through the checks and metallic frames, and secured in place substantially as described.

3. The metallic rim d', having on its inner IOO periphery a transverse spur, j, (one or more,) in combination With two Wooden disks having their peripheries transversely penetrated by the spur, said'disks beingconnected together and provided with exterior straps, forming bearings for the axial pin of the pulley-block.

4. The combination, substantially as described, ofthe metallic rim d', the wooden disks fitting the interior of said rim, and a rib,j, (one or more,) projecting from the inner surface of the rim for engaging with a notch (one or more) in the disks.

5. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the metallic rim d', the Wooden disks ff, tting the interior of said rim, the straps extending diametrically across the Wooden disks, the rivets for securing the straps and the wooden disks together, and the hub projecting from oneJ strap through the Wooden disks and through lthe other strap.

6. The combination, substantially as hereinbefore described, of the metallic rim d', the wooden disks fitting the interior of said rim, the ribs projecting from the inner surface of the rim and engaging with notches in the disks, the straps extending diametrically across the Wooden disks, the rivets for securing the straps and disks together, and the hub projecting from one strap through the disks and through the other strap.
