CARLOS VALENCIA CUDLIPP, OF LIMA, PERU.
DEVICE FOR DESTROYING FLI ES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,869, dated December 18, 190 0. Application filed August 9, I900. Serial No. 26,826. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CARLOS VALENCIA OUD- LIPP,a citizen of Peru, residing at Lima,Peru, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Destroying Flies, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same,
This'invention relates to means for destroying flies and other insects; andthe object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is simple in construction and comparatively inexpensive, and which may be used in dwelling-houses, flats, and other buildings, and by means of which flies may be conveniently disposed of.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, said drawing being a sectional side view of the preferred form of the device or apparatus which I employ.
In the practice of my invention I employ a light string, cord, tape, or similar device A, which is saturated or dipped in a solution of sweetened and highly-inflammable character, or the string, cord, or tape A may be saturated with or dipped in a highly-inflammable or combustible substance and afterward coated or covered in any desired way with a sweetened substance, such as sugar dissolved in water, after which the string, cord, or tape is allowed to dry.
It is a well-known fact that flies collect in the evening on various substances, such as the ceiling or articles suspended therefrom, and in the practice of myinvention I suspend the string, cord, or tape A, prepared as above described, from the ceiling. The flies will gather in large numbers on the string, cord, or tape thus suspended, and at this time a match or other lightingdevice may be applied to the lower end of the string, cord, or tape, and the latter will be quickly consumed by reason of the fact that it has been saturated or coated with highly-inflammable or combustible material. Of course this operation will result in destroying the flies, and it will be apparent that any desired number of the strings, cords, or tapes so prepared may be employed.
In the accompanyingdrawing Ihave shown a bell or similar device B, which may be suspended from the ceiling O or other support, as shown at D, and the string, cord, tape, or
other device A is suspended from the bell B, as shown at E, and the bell serves to prevent the flame of the burning string, cord, or tape from coming in contact with the ceiling or other support.
Any suitable material may be used for the string, cord, or tape, and the latter may be saturated or coated with any combustible or highly-inflammable material, and any suitable sweetened substance may be employed for attracting the flies to the string, cord, or tape.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. The herein-described device for attracting and destroying flies and other insects, which consists of a highly-combustible string, cord, tape or similar article coated or saturated with a sweetened substance and means for detachably suspending the said string from a ceiling or other support, whereby when the insects have congregated upon the string the same may be burned, and another string suspended in its place, substantially as shown and described.
2. The herein-described device for attracting and destroying flies, and other insects, which consists of a highly-combustible string, cord, tape or similar article coated or saturated with a sweetened substance and a bell from which the string, cord, tape or other article is suspended, substantially as shown and described.
3. The herein-described device for attracting and destroying flies and other insects, which comprises the combination of a highlycombustible string, cord, tape or similar article coated or saturated with a sweetened substance, and a suspending device adapted to connect the same with a ceiling or other support, the same comprising means whereby the device may be detachably suspended in order to connect another string after the one is burned, and embodying also means for protecting the ceiling or support and the suspending means from the flame of the string, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I havesigned my name in presence of the subscribing witnesses.
CARLOS VALENCIA OUDLIPP.
