To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, J AcoB HENDRIK MAN- TEL, a subject of the Queen of the Netherlands, and'a resident of Amsterdam, Netherlands, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gears for Bicycles, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a simple and effective gear for bicycles in which beveled gearing is used instead of the sprocket-chain, and the features of my invention will be described fully hereinafter and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l shows the invention in a horizontal section. Fig. 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is a transverse section at the rear wheel. Fig. 3 represents the axle-box in section; Fig. 3b, the axle-pin alone. y Fig. 4 is a sectional view through one of the covers at the crank-shaft.
The driving-axle D, with the bevel-wheel S at the rear, is :arranged in a completelyclosed casing which ts with a projecting ledge Z in a groove t of the bell G surrounding the toothed wheel S', said bell being formed on the rear-wheel hub F, whereby the whole driving-gear is tightly incased and kept dust-proof. This casing on the sleeve P, as shown in the iigures, consists of a round dat plate P', with the bent ledge l and a cylindrical main piece Pfor the driving-axle D and the ball-bearing Z of the same, said main piece being provided with a bulge P2 for the bevel-wheel S. The plate P has only a single small opening 0, through which the bevel-wheel S gears with the bevel-wheel S', set on the hub of the rear wheel. The frametube, as shown in the drawings, is soldered to the cylindrical part P, and the upper tube of the rear-wheel fork rests on this part, while it makes up a whole with the plate P', Figs. l, il, and 3.
The rear-wheel axle consists of a pin E within a hollow box e, on which the cones e are located, one of which is set in by means of a set-nut e2, the box being borne in the hub of the wheel and remaining there in case that the wheel should be taken out of the frame.
The pin E is provided with the thread E for the purpose of screwing it into a bore p of the plate P of the casing P, ncasing the gear at the rear wheel, and its other end possesses a thread on a swelling E2, over which the step L is screwed on, said pin running out into a square head.
In order to insert the rear wheel, it is set into the frame, and the latter is bent out until the ledge Z has penetrated the groove t of the bell G. Then the pin E is inserted, and it is first set through the bore in the frame end H. Then itis placed through the box e and thereafter screwed by its thread E' into the borep of the plate P' until the swelling E2 comes to lie against the extremity of the box. Thus the pin connects firmly the axle with the plate p of the casing P and with the one tine of the rear-wheel fork. I-lereafter the step L is turned on the pin until the other side of the frame presses firmly against the counter-screw Z2 of the cone e' and `against the box e, whereby the axle is firmly connected with the frame at this side as well.
The bore in the part H of the frame is not provided with a thread.
When the rear Wheel is taken out, the step L is first screwed off from the swelled part E2 of the pin E, and then the latter is turned away from the plate P by seizing it at its square E3. Thereafter the pin can be pulled out from the box e when the frame is pulled asunder a little, so that the ledge Z is liberated from the groove z5 in the bell Gr, and the toothed wheel S is disengaged from its engagement with the toothed wheel S. Thus the rear wheel, with the box e, will fall out from the frame. In combination with this .arrangement of the rear-wheel axle the ball-bearings for the driving-axle D are also arranged in a simple manner. In the present arrangement the ball-bearings for the driving-axle D are housed at the side of the rear axle behind the bevel-wheel S in the cylindrical part of the casing P and at the other end of the driving-axle in the loose cover B of the crankaxles. The driving-shaft D is provided at each extremity with conical projectionssand S', which run on the balls in the ball-bearing cups e' and e. This execution simplifies considerably the arrangement at the crank-axle casing. The ball-bearing cup Z is screwed into the cylindrical part of the casing P, set in with the counter-screw e, and so closes this part. Both ball-bearings of the driving-axle IOO lie at the outer side of the bevel-wheels S R', and this arrangement of the bevel-wheels on the driving-axle between the ball-bearings forms an efficient arrangement.
As will be seen from the drawings, the dustcap K for the bevel-wheel R', which engages with the large bevel-wheel R on the crankaxle C, is simply screwed on at the side of the crank-axle to the loose cover B of the crankaXle casing and to the frame of the bicycle.
Finally it should be stated that the (lescribed arrangement allows also a rectangular positionof the bevel-wheel gear in deviation from the drawings.
I claim- 1. In combination, the axle-pin E havinga swelling E2, the box or sleeve e surrounding the axle-pin, and having a fixed cone at its end, the part P' to which the axle-pin is secured and adjacent to which the xed cone is located, the cone e adjustable on the other end of the sleeve e and within the wheel-h ub and the nut ezfo'r locking the adjustable cone er, said cone and nut being within the frame, and the step L screwed on the swelling E2 outside the frame, said swelling E2 serving to force the sleeve tight against the plate P', substantiallyas described.
2. In combination in a cycle, the crankshaft, the rear Wheel, the drive-shaft D, the gearing between the lcrank-shaft and rear wheel respectively and the drive-shaft, the loose cover Bat the crank-shaft and the ballbearings for the said crank-shaft and driveshaft carried by the said cover, substantially as described.
