JOSHUA JOHN NIX, OF ROYERSFORD, PENNSYLVANIA.
GAS OR OIL HEATER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,779, dated December 11,1900- Application filed April 4,1900. Serial No. 11,500. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSHUA JOHN NIX, a citizen of the United States, residing at Royersford, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gas or Oil Heaters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatus for heating, lighting, and ventilating rooms or houses; and the object of the same is to provide simple and efficient means for generating heat from a gas or oil chandelier or from a fireplace, said burners also providing light for the room in which they are placed. I also provide a ventilator to carry off superheated or vitiated air.
By means of my apparatus an apartment may be thoroughly heated, lighted, and ventilated without the consumption of more gas or oil than would be required for illuminating purposes.
I attain the objects referred to by means of the construction shown in the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, and in which Figure 1 is a central vertical section through a chandelier made in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on line w 00, Fig. 1.
Like numerals of-reference designate like parts wherever they occur in both views.
As shown in Fig. 1, my apparatus consists of a chandelier depending from the ceiling, said chandelier comprising a supply-pipe 1 for gas or oil, the incandescent mantles 2, connected to said supply-pipe, and the surrounding. reflector 3, against which the heat and light from the mantles are deflected. The reflector 3 has recesses in its lower sides to form reflecting-surfaces and may be conveniently formed of sheet-alu minium or similar metal and may be corrugated vertically,
Water-back, and a funnel 10, mounted on the end of an inlet-pipe 11, is provided with a stop-cock 12 for supplying water to the water-back. The extension 13 of the return pipe 9 forms a steam-pipe to convey heat around the apartment when the stopcock 12 is closed. The pipes S and 13 may pass upward to the ceiling and outward from the center of the room to the moldings 14, which are formed as supports for the pipes and as supports for pictures. A water-gage 15 may be connected to the water-supply pipe to indicate the water-level in the water-back. A water-pan 16 extends laterally from the lower or base portion of the water-back, and a discharge-plug 17 is provided near the lower end of said water-back opposite the water-pan.
Mounted upon the top of the water-back is a dome 18, filled with asbestos fiber 19, and through this dome the steam- pipes 8 and 13 and the gas-pipe 1 pass.
A ventilator 20 is shown in Fig. 1, and this ventilator may be located near the floor-line or in any suitable place to carry off the vitiated air.
It will be obvious from the foregoing that I the water in the water-back having been heated by the mantles will cause steam to pass through the pipes 8 and 13 around the apartment and give an efficient uniform heat and that the dome filled with asbestos will regulate the heat and give a uniform radiation. The water-pan serves to impart the required humidity to the atmosphere in the room.
'By my invention I provide simple and efficient means for heating, lighting, and ventilating a room in a thorough and uniform manner and at a very slight advance in cost over the expense of lighting alone.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A lighting and heating apparatus, comprising a water-back provided with a hori zontal upper portion and an outwardly-ex tending lower portion, a burner situated therebetween, said upper portion being recessed on the under side above said burner, the recess having a reflecting-surface, and said lower portion having a depression in its surface for the reception of water.
2. In a chandelier, the combination of a Waterback, comprising the lower vertical portion and a horizontal .upper portion, the horizontal upper portion being provided on its lower sides with recesses, said recesses and the sides of the vertical portions having reflecting-surfaces, outflow and return pipes communicating with the water-back, illumiliaising-burners situated beneath the said recesses and a fuel-supply pipe passing through the water-jacket and communicating with 10 the burners.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOSHUA JOHN NIX.
Witnesses: FRANK O. NIX, DAVID SPRINGER.
