IINTTnn STATES PATENT @Ti-Teint FRANCIS JAMES MCDONNEIL, OF NEW BEDFORD, MASSACHUSETTS, AS` SIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO FREDERICK T. ALMY, OF SAME PLACE;
PAPER-FILE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 663,776, dated December 11, 1900;
i Application filed October 17, 1900. Serial No. 33,394. (No model.)
To if/ZZ whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANCIS JAMES MODON- NELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Bedford, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and Improved Paper-File, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved file which is simple and durable in construction and arranged to securely hold receipts, bills, or like documents in place and to prevent the documents from becoming accidentally detached from the iile.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure l. is a sectional side elevation of the improvement, and Fig. 2 is a plan view of the same with parts in section.
On a suitably-constructed base or stand A is secured a tube B, adapted to receive receipts, bills, or like documents, the lowermost document abutting against a flange C, formed on the tube a short distance above the base A. In the tube B, which forms the holder for the documents, extends loosely a spindle D, the upper pointed end extending above the upper end of the tube, the lower end of said spindle extending in the base A and resting on the rear end of a lever E, fulcrumed at E in the sides of the base A. The extreme lower end mof the lever E carries an upwardly-extending rod F, on which is adjustably held a guard G in the form of a rod having its forward end terminating in a fork, between the members of whichfextends the upper projecting end of the spindle D. The guard G is held between nuts F F2, which screw on the upper threaded end of the rod F to permit of adjusting the guard G on the rod 'F to bring the fork end thereof in proper relation to the projecting end of the spindle D. The guard Galso extends loosely through a slot H, formed in the upper end of the back H, secured to the top of the base A between the tube B and the rod F. The back H serves to prevent the operator from placing the bills, receipts, dac., too far over on the spindle D and tube B to interfere with the proper workings of the rod F. The forward end of the lever E is made suiiiciently heavy to hold the spindle D and the rod F normally in the uppermost position shown in Fig. l.
When the operator desires to place a bill, receipt, or like document upon the file, he places the document in contact with the pointed end of the spindle D and then presses downward on the document, so as to force the point of the spindle through the paper, and in doing so the pressure exerted against the spindle D in a downward direction causes the latter to slide downward in the tube B. The downward movement of the spindle D imparts a swinging movement to the lever E, whereby the rod F swings rearward and the guard G moves out of engagement with the spindle D, so that the operator can slide the document down upon the spindle and nally upon the tube B. As soon as the document passes from the spindle D upon the tube then the pressure of the spindle is released, and consequently the lever E by its own weight swings back to its former position, thus bringing the guard G again into an active position relatively to the spindle D to prevent accidental displacement of the document on the tube B and spindle D. A
Thus it will be seen that the guard G is in an active position to prevent the documents from becoming accidentally detached from the iile; but when the operator places another document in position on the file the guard temporarily swings out of an active position into an inactive position to allow the passage of the document from the spindle to the liling-tube, as above explained.
Having thus fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl.. A paper-file having a fixed documentholder, a spindle for guidingadocument upon said holder and having movement relative thereto, and aguard for the documents placed on iile, said guard being controlled by said spindle, so that when the latter is pressed,
