CHIMNEY.

TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, JACOB HEED, of Temperanccville, Belmont county, and State oi Ohio, have invented a new improvement on Chimneys; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full-Land exact description thereof, reference being bad to the accompanying drawing,and to the letters o f ref'erence markcd thereon.

The nature of my invention consists in the following alterations in the original mode of building chimneys, by which a much greater heat-is obtained from the same amount of fuel, and much better draught prodh'ced, and great saving of material in building the same, and all Built of brick or stone.

' In order to enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to describe its construction and operation. In the drawingg Figure 1 is'a perspective view ofmy chimney. Figure 3 is a. second diaphragm.

I construct my chimneys in-the usual form externally. Near or at the throat of the ifire-placc the back wall is provided with twoor more projections, similar to those marked A A in the accompanying drawing, varying of course in number and depth according to the size and depth of the fire-place, instead of all previous plans, by which means all the heat-produced is equally distributed over the room instead of it all being thrown on the hearth, as is the case with those already patent-ed. From the top of the fire-place my chimneys are built with a single wall whcre other chimneys are built solid, leaving a small flue, thereby snving much material in building, leaving the entire chimney above the fireplace hollow. From eight to eighteen inches above the fire-place, varying accordingto size of chimney, (the larger the higher,) I place a. diaphragm, B, which is built from eaclrwall inwards till it covers the entire space of the chimney, lcnving a cylindrical aperture, E, cont-aim ing more square inches than the throat of the chimney; and in houses of tall story I place anotherdiaphragm D, very similar to diaphragm B, with a cylindrical aperture, H, larger than that of B, and in like manner making one diaphragm for each story, with an aperture of the same shape, and eacli aperture larger than the one next below, and also one in the top.

I claim as my improvement, and'dcsire to secure by Letters Patent- I In a chimney, constructed as described, the projections A A and the diaphragms B D, one or more, each provided with an aperture, and arranged substantially as described afidfor the purposes specified.
