Be it lknown thnt I, LABN HEATH, of Boston, in the county of Suffolk, mid' State of' Mnssncliusetts, have .invented n new and useful improvement in the Art of Detecting Counterfeit Bnnk-'Notes and I do hereby declare that the following is n' full, clear, und exactdescription of the sume, reference being had to the nnnexed Figure 1 is n representation of severnl genuine vignettes used in printing4 notional bonlmiotes ofthe denominations of $10, $20, $50, und $100, und

To obviztte v this objection I propose to print upon clear,` white paper, impressions of only apart of the notes of euch denom- `inotioftfrom dupli'cnates of the original flics und plates, first cutting from such dies `or plates n portion thereof',

which muy be done, as shown in iig. 2, by using only one-bult' of theplnte, or, ns shown in tig. 1, by cutting out of the'die or; plnte a' section. The portion printed will thus be perfect and sueient 'for the purposes of comparison, 'but being imperfect, could not` be used by counterfeiters for the purpose-of printing the entire figure, die,;or pleite, as it would be necessary to add the parts thus removed, which would be represented on. the impressionin ink of the sume color astbot used in making the' impression iniig. 1, where o section is removed. By'the use of duplicates of the'genuin-e dies or plates thus mutilated, I am enabled toplnce, cheaply, in the hands ofthe people, all thtLis necessary for looking comparisons with the counterfeits, und at the same time` to avoid `the danger of an improper use being made of such impressions by eounterfeiters.
