REASON HAWKINS,` 0F PALESTINE, INDIANA..
Lener; Patenten. 66,333, datefztuzy 2, 1867.
cnam-'sonnerie TO ALL WHOM IIT MAY CONCERN:
'Be it known that I, REAsoN HAWKINS, of Palestine, Sugar Creek Post Oice, Hancock county, Indiana., have Yinvented a. new and useful Improvement in Grain-Screens; andI do hereby declare that the following is u full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled 'in the art to make und use the same,
reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part'ot' thisspecification, ir i`wl1chV The drawing represents a longitudinal vertical section of my improved grain-screen.
Thisinve'ntion .relates to anvimprovement in the construction of'scre'ens for separating tho trash andl foul seeds of cockle and cheat from wheat and other small grain, and dividing the grain into first and second qualities,
The machineis very simple and cheap in its construction, and is suited 'to the use of farmers generally 'for cleaning and assortingttheir grain before sending it to mill or market.
A 'is a long box, made higherrat one end than the otherfand supported on four posts B which project above the top. lIn the box is a drawer, M, dividedA into two compartments by a cross-partition, b. On the top bf the posts B is set a hopper, C, which opens below upon an inclined bonril, c, over which is placedan-adjust ble cross-bar, for regulating the quantity of grain allowed. torpass. The inclinec is swivelled to lthe posts B at the upper end. The grain'falls from' the hopper on the incline c, and passing under the cross-bar d falls directly upon the trash-screen e, placedl horizontally, or nearly so, and mude of coarse wire netting, to allow all the grain' to pass through and'throw off onlythe chaff' and other iight Stull` over .the head of the machine on which its rests. An inclined openbOX, D, is suspended at the lower end to the posts B, on fpivots gg, in slots oli-elongated holes in the posts, the head of the box being placed under the trash-screen e, and resting von the roller E, while the lower end projects over the` end of the box A. A screen, li, is made of strongwire, with 4n mesh small enough to prevent the full-sized grainsof the best quality from passing' through, and is fastened in the open box D from end to end; and across the box are placed five cross-bars c lc, more or less. The lower side of the bars isset just far enough above the screenjz to allow the gra in to poss the bars while they retdrd its forward movement over the screen, so as to sift outall the smaller und inferi-or grains which pass through the screen' While the s uperiorgrain is discharged at thefoot of the screen. .llnotherV screen, m, is made of finer wire, and smaller meshes, andis placed a few inches below the screen a. It extends'from 'the head of the box D nearly to' the bottom, and terminates over one ofthe compartments in the drawer M, for discharging th inferior second quality oi grainV therein, while the cheat,V cockie, and other foul seeds und dirt f'nll through` the screen directly into' thc other compnrtmeht in the drnwer M, The box D is provided with a tloorjtt, that exte'ndsrlown from the head to discharge what foul seeds fall througlrthe upper part of the screen m into the `drawer.' The screensbox 4D is su ,ol-ted b the floor' n u on the octu. onul roller E hun inthe osts B B',
PP y P c g g P' which is turned hyfa crank, 1n. The screens have an oscillating or vihratory motion for the 'purpose ofsifting the grain, the operation of which ismanifest. 4
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
'.lhe arr'an ementof the screens h and m, and the cross-bars lc k, in the box D and the trash-screen e, at the head of the bo'x, in combination with the octagonal r'oller E, operating ne und for thelpurposes hereinl described,
' l The above specification of my Vinvention signed by uio this 4th tiny of March, 1867. p
