IMPROVEMENT ,IN STOP-COCKS;
(Lil e ficlgrhule meant in in time ihtters finial me making 92st at Ilgc 5mm.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONOERNi Be it known that I, GEORGE D. .HADLEY, of Cincinnati, in the county of Hamilton, and'Stateof Ohio, have invented a-new and useful improvement in Water-Cocks and I do herehyjeclere that the following is a full,
clear, and exact description'thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference-ra ing had to the accompanying drawing forming part ofthis specification.
This improvement relates to a new and improved method of constructing water-cocks tobe used fdr hydrants and in 'simulur' situations; and the invention'consists in fo mingthe's eat'of the valve in a globe shell, u.ud in the peculiar formation of the valve, and also in the manner in which it is operated, as I will proceed to describe. i l
The drawing represents e vertical central section of the cock, showing plainly-the parts of which it is corn.
posed, and the manner of their arrangement.
A represents the shell of the cook, the inner chamber of which is a globular' cavity, in which the valves I works. 13 is the valve; C isthe valve-stem; Dis the 'cap; D is an elastic disk; E is an eccentric lever by wvhich the valve is operated. The cnpDscrews down ou to the shell \vithau-"elastic disk, composed of rubber or some equivalent substance, betv'veenjit andthe shell,as seen in the drawinm 1 This elastic disk or. valve is slipped over the spindle or valve-stem, and springs into a groove \vhieh is turned for it in the stem. This keeps and insures a. tight joint, and at the some time it actsns a cushion to prevent the too. .sudden closing of the valve under the pressure of the 'water. The lower side of the valve has guides attached to it, which are iudieated by a. The valve is operatedhy a. lever, whose loivervend is so attached ,to the" vulvc-stemthat it raises the valve by a gradual motion as the lever is loivered} the lower end of the lever being attached-to the stem occentrically, and with the eccentric hearing on the top of the cap D. i This movement, iueomhinatioh with the elastic disk, prevents injury to the valve by any sudden jerking or rapid movement.
What I claim as'new, and desire tosecure by Letters Patent, is-- v The eccentric lever, by which the valve is operated, the elastic disk D the eap-D confining the diskD' and the valve B with its guides a, in combination with the shell of a water-cock, the whole. constructed an arranged substantially as herein. shown and described forthe purposes set forth.
' i I GEO. D. HADLEY.
