CEILING CUT-OUT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 663,217. dated December 4, 1900.

Be it known that I, WALTER A. CHURCH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburg, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ceiling Out-Outs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvementsin electrical cut-outs for electrical circuits, and has for its object the production of a simple, economical, and practical device which is strong, durable, and effectual.
To this end it consists, essentially, in a base provided with a pair of binding-posts connected to a pair of contacts, each of which is adapted to engage a contact-yoke secured to a movable cap. Each of these yokes is suitably connected to a contact-plate having wires connected thereto which extend upwardly through the cap.
The invention finally consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter more fully described, and specifically pointed out in the claims.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forminga part of this specification,and wherein like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several views, in Which- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the base of my improved cut-out. Fig. 2 is an inverted plan view of the cap. Fig. 3 is a side view of the base. Fig. 4 is a cross-sectional view of the base and cap connected together. Fig. 5 is a transverse vertical sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 4. Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the cap. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the fastening-hook for connecting the base and cap together. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the fastening-catch. Fig. 9 is an inverted perspective view of the contact-yoke. Fig. 10 is a perspective view of one of the corn tacts.
Referring to the drawings by referencenumerals, 1 indicates the base, having suitably secured thereto a pair of contacts 2 3,
provided on their one end with an upwardlyextending curved contact-flange at. The underneath faces of the outer portionof the contacts have formed integral therewith a downwardly-extending clamping-lug 5, to which the wires are clamped by means of the binding-post 6 extending through the opening 7 in the end of the contacts. The upper face of the base is provided with a pair of diametrically opposite fastening catches 8 and also provided with a pairof diametrically op positely arranged upwardly-extending guidelugs 9.
10 indicates a pair of apertures through which a suitable fastening means operates to secure the base of the ceiling. The base is constructed of a suitable non-conducting material.
-11 indicates a cap which is mounted upon the base and is secured thereto by means of a pair of diametricallyarranged fasteninghooks 12, which are mounted upon contactplates 13, each having a binding-post 14 connected thereto to which the fuse-wires are connected and which passdownwardly through the opening 15, arranged centrally of the cap. The contact-plates are arranged diametrically opposite each other. The lower face of the cap is also provided with a pair of contactyokes 16, formed integral with the plates 17. These yokes are oppositely arranged and secured in position by means of screws 18, operating through the cap,as shown. The plates 13 are connected one to each of the plates 17 by f use-wires 19, secured to the binding-posts 14 and 1a, respectively, as shown in Fig. 2.
The operation of myimproved switch is as follows: The cap being placed on the base it is turned until the hooks l2 engage the catch 8, which connects the base and cap together and at the same time brings the contact-yokes into engagement with the flanges 4 of the contacts, completing the circuit from the current-supply wires through the fusewires to the lamp and return, as in the ordinary manner.
It is thought that the many advantagesof my improved cut-out will be readily apparent from the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings,and it will be noted that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invent-ion, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is p 1. A ceiling cut-out comprising an insulated base-block, a pair of contacts secured to the outer face of said block, said contacts provided on their one end with a clampinglug and on their other end with an outwardlyextending contact-flange, a pair of fasteningcatches secured on the outer face of said block and located on a diameter at right angles to the contacts, a cap engaging the outer face of the said block, fastening-hooks carried by said cap and adapted to engage with the fastening-catches carried by the baseblock, contact-plates carried by said cap, and yokes formed integral with said plates for engagement with the contact-flanges of the contacts, as and for the purpose described.
2. A ceiling cut-out comprising an insu lated base-block, apair of contacts secured to the outer face of said block, said contacts provided on their one end with a clampinglug and on their other end with an outwardlyextending contact-flange, fastening-catches secured on the outer face of said block and located on a diameter at right angles to the contacts, a pair of fastening-catches secured on the outer face of said blockQa pair of guidelugs secured on the block, a cap engaging said block, fastening-hooks carried by said cap and adapted to engage with the fasteningcatches carried by the base-block, and yokes carried by said cap and adapted to engage with the outwardly-extending contact-flanges of the contacts, as and for the purpose described.
