Letters Patent No. 66,300, dated July 2, 1867.

IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.

TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:

Be it known that I, ALBERT W. COX, of Indianapolis, in the county of Marion, and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Farm-Grates; and I do hereby declare the following tube a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which correspondingparts are indicated by the same letters of reference.

In this gate the rails are pivoted and combined with the latch in such a manner that in the :act of raising the latehthe gate is also elevated, thereby adapting it to be opened without the necessity of clearing away accumulated snow or other obstacle.

Figure 1, in the drawings, is a perspective view of a gate illustrating my invention.

AA are the posts; 1313 13 are the horizontal rails, andC C C are the battens of a farin-gate. The rails arc'attached to the battens by pivots or loose pins 0 c e, and thegatc is supported upon the post A by the hinges'D D. The latch E is pivoted to the gate at e, and is connected with the end battens G G by the arms F F, which are also attached by loose joints. E is a handle, joined rigidly to the latch E, and all'ording the means for raising the latter. It will be seen that the handle E and latch E constitute a lever which, acting upon the arms]? F, when the latch is elevated serves to raise the battens C C, and threw the rails into an inclined position, thus enabling the gate to swing above and out of contact with obstacles upon, the ground. The latch is held by thecatch G on post A when thegate is in its closed position, and when the latch is raised it is sustained upon the shoulder H, the latch being held thereon by the spring I. When the gate is closed the latch E'is suddenly arrested by contact with the post A, but the gate continues to swing until its motion is arrested by the stationary stop-pin J'. This additional or independent motion of the gate carries the shoulder Hfrom under the latch E,'a'nd the spring I gives backward momentarily, as indicated by the dotted red lines in fig. 2, to permit the latch to fall and engage with the catch G. As soon as the latch falls, the buttons C C also descend, and the rails B B assume their normal horizontal positions. The stake K with its inclined face serves as a guide to direct the descending batten O and latch E into position when the gate is closed.

What Iclaim as new, and desire to secure .by Letters Patent, is

1. The provision in-a jointed gate of the latch E, and handle E,'connected in such a manner that the raising of the latch shall effect the elevation of the gate, substantially as described. I

2. I claim the combination of the gate B C C C", latch E, handle E, and arms F F, arranged and operating in the manner and for the purpose set forth.

3. I claim the arrangement of the parts H I J K, for sustniningthe gate and latch in their elevated position when the gate is opened, and permitting them to assume their normal positions when the gate is closed, as described.
