Description

No. 662,890. Patanted Nov. 27, |900.
R. BDRSDOBF.
ADJUSTABLE METAL FITTING FOR EARTHENWARE. (Application filed Nov. 13, 1899.) (In Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
REINHOLD BORSDORF, OF PULSNITZ, GERMANY.
ADJUSTABLE METAL FITTING FOR EARTHENWARE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 662,890, dated November 2'?, 1900.
Application filed November 18, 1899. Serial No. 736,832. (No model.)
To (LZ/Z whom it may concern,.-
Be it known that I, REINHOLD BoEsDoEE, a subject of the German Emperor, and a resident of Pulsnitz, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, (and whose post-office address is Pulsnitz, Saxony, Germany,) have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Metal Fittings for Earthenware, of
which the following is a specification.
The objects of my present invention are to provide adjustable metal fittings for earthenware, such as pots, saucepans, jugs, or the like, and to increase resistance and durability of these ordinarily fragile articles.
'With these objects in View my invention consists of novel features and parts and coinbinations of the same, as will be fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like letters refer to like parts throughout all the views, Figure 1 is an elevational view of an earthen pot equipped with my improvements. Fig. 2 is a bottom plan view of same, and Figs. 3 and 4 are enlarged detail views of the device for adjusting the iittings.
The improved metal fittings consist of a strip a, fitted all around the earthen pot c and resting on an annular shoulder b, formed on the outer surface of said-pot. The ends of said circular strip or band d are bent outwardly at right angles and have pins d e suitably secured thereto, said pins being provided with right and left screw-threads, respectively, and adapted to engage the corresponding internal screw-threads of a nut f. The latter is provided with four or more holes to receive the end of a pin when it is desired to rotate the nut in either direction to tighten or loosen said circular strip or band c. From the latter are suspended two straps t', the ends of which are bent around the strip a and which extend downwardly to the lower edge of the pot c and then across the bottom surface of said pot, as shown in Fig. 2, said bands e' being connected to each other at their intersecting point in any suitable way.
In order to provide a smooth outer surface for the pot c and hold the bands t in proper position, the annular shoulder b is recessed at the points 7e Z, where said bands extend downwardly, and the lower edge of the pot c is also provided with a circular downwardlyprojecting rib m, also recessed at respective points for the passage of the bands t'. An other concentric circular rib n may be provided on the bottom of the pot c, (see Fig. 2,) said rib being again recessed for the passage of the bands i'.
Il is evident that the number of bands t' may be varied as required for the circumstances of each particular case without departing from the scope of the invention.
The improved littings strengthen the earthen pots and increase their durability, and when the pots are cracked the portions are still securely held together by said littings.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with earthen pots and the like, an annular shoulder on the external surface thereof, recesses in said shoulder, a downwardly-projecting circular rib on the bottom edge of the pots, corresponding recesses in said rib, a concentric circular rib on the bottoni surface of the pots, and corresponding recesses in said rib, of a circular metal band fitted around the pots and resting on the said annular shoulder, a plurality of bands suitably secured to said circular band and extending downwardly and across the bottom surface of the pots through the said recesses, and means for easily and readily tightening and loosening said circular band, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two witnesses.
REINHOLD BORSDORF.
Witnesses HEINRICH RITTER, HERNANDO DE Soro.
