JAMES BAIN, Or BROOKLYN, DQ, NEW YORK 4 Letters .Patent No. 66,281, dated July 2. 1867.
turnover) VENT-PLUG,
@geigende numb in in these 'Entert hitent intersting' part nf Itige smut.
To ALL WHOM- IT MAY QONOERN:
Be it known that I, JAMES BAIN', of Brooklyn, in thecounty o f Kings, in thc Stateof New York, have invented a new-and useful Infproved Vent-Plug; and I hereby declare that the following is a full, exact, and clear description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to 'make andluse the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification, in which drawing-' Figure 1 represents u. longitudinal central section of thsinvention. r
Figure 2 is a transverse' section of the same,tnlen in the plane indicated by the linear, iig. 1.
Figure 3 is a similarsection ofthe same, tlledine g q, fig. 1, indicating the plane of the section.

This inventionrel'ats to a vent-plug which is provided'with a valve, that is adjustable by means of alsex-ewrod and spring, and itted into a scat in thelinner end of the plug, which is perforated with suitable vent holes insuch a manner 'that when the pressure' of the external atmosphereexceds the pressure' Vof the :atmosphere in the interiorofA the barrel, combined with the power -eiterted by the spring, the valve is -forced openrand a. suificient quantity of air is permitted to enter to cause the liquid to discharge from the barre'hand by adjustingthe powerof the spring the valve can be set, and the quantity of air admitted into the barrel can always he reduced to the 'minimum or to the exact quantity required to causevthe contents of thebarrel tordischarge.V
The valve-seat lis made removable, so thatlthe same, together with the v`alve,`an'bereadilyftaken oil" for the purpose of cleaning'. The oute'r'endiof the plug is provided with an air-chamber and an adjustable cap', by means of which the supply of air to the barrel can'be regulated lor stopped at pleasure;
A represents a plug, which may be made of -wood, metal, or any other suitablefmaterial, and which is 'secured in the barrelfby a screw-thread or in 'any other suitable manner. This plug is bored out, as'clearly shown in ligQl'of the drawing, end ts inner end-forms the seat B forthe valveC. The stemof this valve extends upn intothe cavity of the plug, andits'en'd is provided with a screw-thread on which is fitted the nut a. Between this nut and the inner surface of the seat B is placed a spring, b, which presses against the nut and husa tendency to keep'the valveC its seat. By turning the nnt'a .up ordown the power of the; spring is decreased or increased, and the-valve is heldin its seatrwith greater or less force. If the pressureV of the gases in the interior of the barrel decreases to such anni enten't that the Vexternalpressure' of the atmosphere is able to` overcome said internal pressuretogether with the force' ofthe spring b, a suicient quantity of air .passespint'o the barrel to cause the vcontents thereof to discharge, and as soon as the internal pressure reaches a certain point the valve closes andthe communicationwith the external atmosphere 'is stopped up. By adjusting the force Vot the vspring the time when the valve closescan be regulated at pleasure, and all loss of gases from s the interior of the barrel is prevented, and at the same time the contentsl of the barrel4 are preserved from the injurious influence of the atmspheric'air. 'Iheseat Bfis securedin4 the-plug by a screw-thread, ur vin any. suit`- able manner, so that the same, together with the valvefcanbe readilyremoved for the purpose oli' cleaning, or that a metallic seat can be attached to a woodenp'lug., `The outer end' of the plug is bored out to form an airchamber, D, which' communicates withthe'external atmosphere through a series'of holes, c, and with' the cavity of the plug through an aperture, d, in the transverse partition; Said air-chnmberis furnished withasrewcap, E, which is provided withel broad flange, f. I'fthis cap is screwed clear down, the flange f'bears tight upon theex ternal surface of the barrelpand prevents dirt from-getting into the airchamber, and 'the 'inner-end of the cap bears air-tight against a washer onvthe bo'ttomjof the air-chamber, and thereby' the communication between the interior of the barrel andthe external atmosphere is eectually stopped, and the loss of any portion of the contents of the bnr-rel by leakage through the plugV is prevented, and nb air is permitted toypass into the barrel. By unscrewing the cap'more or less, .the quantity of air which is permitted to enter the barrel can be regulated.
By this means a vent-'plug is obtained lwhich is not liable to get out of repair, and which eiiectually protects Y the contents of the `barrel against the injurious influence of the atmospheric air. i
what I claim 'as new, und desire to secure by Letters Patennisf- 1. The valve C, nut a, and spring b, in combination withv the seat B in the inner end of' the plug A, suh stantially as and for the Vpurpose described.
2. Themovable seat B, in combination with'the valve C, nut ,springb, and plug` A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. The air-chamber D and cap F, in cembinahtionwith the plug A ,and valve C, eonstruccl and operating f substantially as and for thc purpose described.
. JAMES BAIN.
