The pad is preferably of the ordinary construction of pads with its top and side adjacent to the attaching-plate glued and with its loose edges at the bottom and outer side, so that when the supporting-plate is dropped the pad may hang with its loose edges at the bottom. This clamp consists, preferably, of a strip h, having an upwardly-extending edge h, adapted to be slipped about the depending top or bottom f f with the depending portion between the parts it and h. At its upper edge the clamp has a downwardly-projecting lip 72. between which and the plate F the paper, pad, or blanks are adapted to be clamped, there being preferably sufficient spring in the clamp to accommodate any reasonable thickness of pad or blanks it is desired to use in the holder. This lip or clamping edge extends parallel with the rod E distant from the longitudinal plane of the axis of the rod.

The holder is arranged so that it may be used either at the left or the right side of a desk or other article. In Fig. 1 it is shown attached to the right of a desk, having the clamp H secured to its upper edge. If it is desired to use the holder as a left-hand holder, the holder is simply turned around, so as to bring its top edge to the bottom, and the clamp H is placed at .its other end, which will then be the top, when the holder will be a left-hand holder.

The clamp H has a thumb-piece h for its ready manipulation. This thumb-piece may be stamped out of the clamp proper similarly to the lugsf.

The plate may have a recess f to allow for the socket O. The clamp H may have a sharp edge 72, so that the memorandum made may be readily torn from the pad. If desired, the plate may be stamped with suitable perforations or configurations to present a pleasing appearance.

The uses and conveniences of my device may be best described in connection with a roll-top desk. When the desk is open, the blanks or pad in the holder may be used for the purposes of an ordinary scratchpad for making memoranda, but provides a means for always having the pad in convenient location, where it is always ready for use and in no danger of becoming lost or buried under the papers of a desk. The holder may be adjusted so as to present the most convenient angle for writing, as shown in full lines or by dotted lines 2, Fig. l, and when it is desired to place it out of use the nut is relieved and the plate and pad dropped alongside the desk. When the desk is closed, the plate and pad or tablet are again thrown into lateral position at the desired angle and a customer or other person coming to the desk and desiring to communicate with the person having the desk in charge writes his request, memoradum, or instructions on the upper piece of paper in the pad,'tears it 01f, and slips it through the usual openingb in the side of the desk. The holder may also be secured at any desirable point -on the side of the desk as, for instance, where shown in full lines in Fig. 1 or where shown in dotted lines at wand may also be placed at the right or left hand of a desk and in either or any position or whether at right or left may be angled as desired and dropped down out of the way, if desired.

My device is exceptionally convenient for the purposes for which it is intended. It is simple and economical in construction and convenient in operation and use.

I claim- 1. In a holder of the character described,

'the combination of an attaching-plate, a rod extending laterally therefrom, a supportingplate also extending laterally to the attaching-plate substantially parallel with the rod, a hinge between the attaching-plate and rod, a securing device for exerting pressure on the hinge and supporting-plate in opposite directions substantially longitudinally of the rod and plane of the supporting-plate, means on the supporting-plate extending substantially parallel with the rod laterally to the attaching-plate for receiving aclamp for paper pad and the like and distant from the longitudinal plane of the axisof the rod, with the supporting-plate arranged to swing in lateral position about an axis lateral to the attaching-plate at about the middle of the supporting-plate, with the means for receiving a clamp maintained substantially parallel with and distant from the longitudinal plane of the axis of the rod, and constructed and arranged for permitting the supporting-plate and rod to be dropped out of the way so as to hang from the attaching-plate while the supporting-plate, rod and means for receiving the clamp are maintained substantially parallel, substantially as described.

2. In a holder of the character described, the combination of an attaching-plate, a rod extending laterally therefrom, a supportingplate also extending laterally to the attaching-plate substantially parallel with the rod, a hinge between the attaching-plate and rod, a securing device for exerting pressure on the hinge and supporting-plate in opposite directions substantially longitudinally of the rod and plane of the supporting-plate, means at both top and bottom of the supportingplate extending substantially parallel with the rod laterally to the attaching-plate for, receiving a clamp for paper pad and the like and distant from the longitudinal plane of the axis of the rod, with the supporting-plate arrangedto swing inlateral position about an axis lateral to the attaching-plate at about the middle of the supporting-plate, with the means for receiving a clamp maintained substantially parallel with and distant from the longitudinal plane of the axis of the rod, and

constructed and arranged for permitting the supporting-plate and rod to be dropped out of the way so as to hang from the attachingplate while the supporting-plate, rod and means for receiving the clamp are maintained substantially parallel, substantially as described.

3. In a holder of the character described, the combination of an attaching-plate, with a rod and a pivotally-arranged supporting-plate extending laterallytherefrom and. maintained in substantially parallel planes, a hinge between the attaching-plate and the rod, and a clamp for the supporting-plate and rod constructed and arranged for producing pressure on the hinge and supporting-plate in opposite directions longitudinally of the rod and plane of the supporting-plate and for permitting the supporting plate and rod to be dropped so as to hang from the attachingplate, substantially as described.

4. In a holder of the character described, the combination of an attaching-plate, a pivoted supporting-plate extending laterally with relation thereto, a rod for the supporting-plate extending laterally to the attaching-plate substantially parallel to the supporting-plate, a hinge between the rod and attaching-plate, and a clamp for the rod for clamping the supporting-plate between the clamp and the attaching-plate by exerting pressure on the supporting-plate and hinge in opposite directions substantially longitudinally of the rod and of the plane of supporting-plate, and with the supporting-plate and rod arranged to be dropped out of the way while maintained in substantially parallel position so as to hang from the attachingplate, substantially as described.

5. In a holder of the character described, the combination of an attaching-plate, a supporting-plate extending laterally with relation thereto, a rod extending laterally from the attaching-plate parallel to the supporting-plate with the supporting-plate pivoted about the rod, and a clamp at the, outer end of the rod for clamping the supporting-plate between the clamp and attaching-plate by forcing the supporting-plate and rod in opposite directions longitudinally of the rod and of the plane of the supporting-plate, and

with the supporting-plate and rod arranged to be dropped out of the way while maintaining their relatively parallel position so as to hang from the attaching-plate, substantially as described.

6. In a holder of the character described, the combination of an attaching-plate, a pivoted supportingplate extending laterally with relation thereto, a rod for the supporting plate extending laterally from the attaching plate parallel to the supporting-plate, and a clamp at the outer end of the rod for clamping the supporting-plate between the clamp and attaching-plate by forcing the supportingplate and rod in opposite directions longitudinally of the rod and of the plane of the supporting-plate, and with the supporting-plate and rod arranged to be dropped out of the way while maintaining their relatively parallel position so as to hang from the attachingplate, substantially as described.

7. In a holder of the character described, the combination of an attaching-plate A, having a socket C, and a slot 0, a rodEwith ball D thereon taking into the socket, a plate F extending longitudinally of and parallel with the rod with the plate swingingly secured with relation to the plate A, depending side f and depending extensions f and nut e at the outer end of rod E and outside of plate F, constructed and arranged for clamping the plateF between the nut and plate A by forcing the plate F and rod in opposite and parallel directions longitudinally of the rod E and of the plane of the plate F, and with the plate F and rod E arranged to be dropped out of the way while maintaining their relatively parallel positions so as to hang from the attaching-plate with the pad side of the plate outward, substantially as described.
