Description

@uiten faire getraut @ffies IMPROVEMENT IN HAND-SAWS.
v @Ligt 5:11am:` referat in in tigen tettersrtmt sur making part ni' tlgrame.
To ALL WHOM IT MAY coNcERN:
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. ROE, of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Back-Saws, and that the following description, taken in con nection with the accompanying drawings, hereinafter referred to, forms a full and exact specification of the same, wherein I have set forth the 4nature and principles of my said improvement, by which my invention may be distinguished from all others of asimilar class, together with such parts as I claim and desire to have secured to Ine by Letters Patent.
This invention relates toa new and useful improvement in what are commonly termed by `ioiners baclsaws, and has for -its object the straining, by a simple means, of the saw-plate whenever the same becomes bent, or kinked, as it is technically termed, so that it may be brought in a plane, and have a straight cutting edge, or one-free from lateral bends or kinks.' These back-saws have their plates as they are used for -ne work, the cuutting of tenons, etc., and the plates are consequently very liable to become -bent or kinhed, so much so as to frequently render 'it difficult to use'them and make a smooth kerf orcut. In the accompanying sheet of drawings Figure 1 is a side view of -my invention partly in section. p
Figure 2, IL. transverse section of the same, taken in the line :v g. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A represents the plate of a backsaw; B the back, and C the handle thereof. These parts are ccnstructed in the usual. manner. The back B is secured to the saw-plate 'A by two rivets a a, one passing through the front and the other through the rear end of the back, as'shown in iig. 1. Through the centre of the back B avscrew, D, passes, and bears against the centre of the upper edge of the saw-plate, or against asniall rodror pin, t, fitted thereon, (see both figures.)
In case of the saw-plate becoming bent or kinlred, it may be-brought in a plane, and so as to have a straight cutting edge, or one free from lateral bends or kinks, by screwing downward or inward the screw D, thereby depressing the centre of the upper edge of the plate, which, in consequence of Abeing secured to the back at'its front and rear ends only, will cause the plate to be strained, and all bends and kinks taken out of it. In lieu of a screw, a key or wedge may be used; Vbut a screw would be preferable.
Having thus described my invention, I4 claim as new,and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- The application of a screw or its equivalent to a back-saw, substantially in the manner as andhfor the purpose herein set forth. l
EDWARD H. ROE.
