NIED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALFRED OLSON, OF SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA.
COVER FOR POTS OR KETTLES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 661,190, dated November 6, 1900.
Application filed June 4, 1900. Serial No. 19,015. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED OLSON, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Diego, in the county of San Diego and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Covers for Pots or Kettles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in covers for pots and kettles; and its primary object is to provide a deviceof simple and durable construction having means whereby the kettle, 850., upon which it is placed may be readily ventilated to permit the escape of more or less steam, &c., as desired.
To these ends the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter more fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, showing the preferred form of my invention, and in which Figure 1 is a plan view; and Fig. 2 is a section on line 2 2, Fig. 1.
Referring to said figures by numerals of reference, 1 is the body of the cover, having an angular bead 2 formed in the upper surface thereof concentric to its center. A bolt 3 extends upward fromthe center of the top of the cover and is provided With a knob 4, which bears upon a slide 5 of peculiar construction. This slide is provided with an ann ular bead 6 upon its upper surface near one end thereof, forming a groove corresponding and adapted to register with the bead 2 of the top of the cover, and strips 7 are struck up from the said slide at opposite sides of the knob and clamp the lower end of the knob therebetween. A semicircularshaped opening or slot 8 is formed in the cover, and the slide 5 is a little larger than the said slot and is adapted to entirely close the same when desired.
It will be seen that as the ears or projec= tions 7 firmly clamp the knob 4 said knob cannot be turned without revolving the slide therewith, said slide bearing upon the bead 2, which, together with the bolt 3, prevents lateral movement thereof. v
It will be understood that the amount of ventilation through the cover will be regulated by the size of the opening exposed by the slide 5, and, if desired, said slide may be moved entirely from over the slot 8.
, In the foregoing description I have shown the preferred form of myinvention; but I do not limit myself thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the advantages thereof, and I therefore reserve the right to make such changes as fairly fall Within the scope of my invention.
Having thus described iny invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination with a cover having a slot therein; and an annular bead concentric to the center thereof; of a slide adapted to cover the slot; a bead thereon forming a groove which corresponds and registers with the bead of the cover; a bolt engaging the slide and cover and serving as a pivot for said slide; a knob secured to the bolt; and projections struck up from the slide at opposite sides of the base of the knob and clamping the same thereto whereby said slide and knob are adapted to be turned in unison.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALFRED OLSON.
