VICTOR EMIL EMGARTH, PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
ROTARY RECIPROCATING PUMPING APPARATUS.
SPECIFICATION forming part 0f Letters Patent N0. 660,681, dated October 30, 1900.
` Application filed July 25, 1899. Serial No. 725.048. (No model-l 'T0 all wh/0m. it nutg/ concern:
Be it known th at LVIcToE EMIL EMGARTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rotary Reciprocating Pu mping Apparatus, of which the'fcllowing is a specification.
My invention has relation to a rotary reciprocating pumping apparatus, and in such connection it relates to the particular construction and arrangement of such an apparatns. u
The nature and scope of my invention will be more fully understood from the following description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, in which Figure l is a view, partly in side elevation and partly in hroken section, of a rotary reciprocating pumping apparatus embodying Fig. 2 is a top or plan view of the pumping apparatus, partly sectioned. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the lineacof Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a diagrammatic view illustrating the periphery of the sleeve or collar of the plunger, projected upon a flat surface to more clearly illustrate the cam projection thereof; and Fig. 5 is a side elevational view, in broken section, of a modied form of the plunger with a cam-groove provided with dwell and thrust portions.
Referring to the drawings, a and d represent hollow standards united to each other at the top and bottom by hollow casings d2 and a3 of oblong cross-section and forming, respectively, the inlet and outlet chambers for uid. These oblong casings are provided with an inlet d4 and with an outlet d5, and the standards d and ct are provided with inlet and outlet ports cland a7, leading to the cylinders b and b', through openings c2 in valves c and c in the ends of said cylinders, to be presently fully explained. The direction of travel of the fluid from the inlet to the outlet of the apparatus is indicated by the arrows in Fig. l of the drawings. The two cylinders b and b are supported in horizontal position by the standards o. and a and are provided with glands or stuffing-boxes h2 and hi". The valves c and c are cup shape and perforated and abut against one end of each of the said cylinders, as illustrated in Fig. l, and are respectively secured to a horizontal shaft d. This shaft is journaled at each end in brackets or bearings d/ and d2, provided with glands or stuffing-boxes d3 and (Z4. Between the outer wall of each valve and the end bearings of the shaft d in the latter is provided a recess or way d, and in the wall of each valve are provided openings (Z7, so that fluid from the respective cylinders may enter said openings (17 into the recess or way d6 to form lubricating or antifriction-fluid packingsbetween the valves c and c' and bearings d' and d2 of the shaft d, and also to eect a counter-balancing influence of the valves with respect to the bearings of the said shaft d during the forward reciprocation of the plunger, thereby to insure within either cylinder bor h a reliable balance-valve for the working parts of the pump. On one end of the shaft d is mounted a pulley cls for roi tating said shaft. On the shaft Ad are provided splines or ribs d, adapted to secure the plunger c against turning independently of the shaft d, but not to prevent the sliding of the same back and forth on said shaft d. The plunger c in Figs. l, 2, and 3 is provided with a collar or sleeve c', having a cam projection c2, with two opposiIely-arranged thrust portions e3 and e4 and two dwell portions e5 and e6, interposed between the said thrust portions, as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4.
g and g are two rolls fixed to the casing d3 and arranged to engage the cam projection e2 of the collar or sleeve c of the plunger e to permit of the reciprocations of the plunger in the respective cylinders h and h and also to hold momentarily the plunger during the alternate opening and closing of the openings c2 of the cup-shaped valves c and c' to and from the cylinders b and b and to and from the inlets and outlets a6 and ci of the casings d and a and anterior to further reciprocations of 'the plunger on its shaft d.
In Fig. 5 is illustrated a modification of the plunger c, which in this instance is provided with a cam-groove e7, with two oppositely-arranged thrust portions es and two dwell portions e9, interposed between the thrust portions in a similar manner as is illustrated for.
the cam projections c2 of the plunger c in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, and particularly in Fige. `In this instance but one roll ew is employed, arranged horizontally and journaled to the casing d3. The roll 610, being fixed, has a bearing within the cam-groove e7, and in the ro- IOO l tation of the plunger ewith the shaft d it lis'f given thereby a Ereciprocatory movement-on.
the said splined shaft d, and likewise is afforded a momentary dwell to permit of the alternate opening and closing of the inlets and outlets c2 of and from the valves c and c' to the cylinders h and b', with the inlets and outlets a6 and a7 of the casings ct and a anterior to the further reciprocation of the plunger e on the shaft d.
The mode of operation of the pumping ap,- paratus hereinbefore explained is as follows:
When the plunger, for example, as illustrated" in Fig. 1,is near the end of the cylinder b', the
Valve c' and the rolls g and g/ will have moved the plungers e so as to engage about the middle of the dwell portion e6 of the cam projection e2, as illustrated in Figs-1 and 2.. In this position the two valves c and c will be turned by the shaft d to completely close the opening a", leading to the cylinder b from the hollow standards a. The two valves c and c' are so arranged on the shaft d that their openings c2 are opposite to each-other. The further rotation of the shaft d now turns the' of the standard a and a small portion c2 of the v alve c to the inlet-opening a6 from'the standard a, as ill'ustated in Figs. l, 2, and 3, thus partially opening the water-inlet a6 of thestandard a and thewater-outlet a7 fromthe standard a'. As the plunger e continues to move longitudinally, as well asina rotary direction, the valves c and c will continue to rotate `until at a point whenl the plunger e is midway between the ends of the respective cylinders b and b and the rolls g and g are at the middle of the thrust portion e3, when the openings c2 in the Valves c and c will be at their widest extent and begin'to decrease as the plunger e travels toward the right-hand end of the cylinder b. When the rolls are brought to a position corresponding to the center of the seconddwell` c5 of the cam projection e2, the plunger@ will be adjacent to the right-hand end of the cylinder b and the inlet a6 and outlet al will bothf be completely closed. The further movement of the shaft d causes merely'a rotary Inovement of the plunger c and also turns thev valves c and c', so as topresent at the mo-g ment the rolls g and g are brought into engagement with the thrust portion c4 and the plunger e begins to travel to the left vthe openings c2 to open, respectively, the inlet a6 and-outlet a7" of the standard a.
Having thus described the nature and objects of 'my invention, what 'I claim` as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-- l. In a rotary reciprocating pumping apparatus', two hollow standards united to each other by hollow casings provided with an inlet and an outlet registering with an inlet.- port andan outlet port provided in said standards, a splined shaft provided with cupshaped valves rotatable with said shaft and having openings in communication with one end of each of two fixed cylinders supported by said standards, each of said cylinders at one of their ends being provided with a gland or stuffing-box, a plunger secured to said shaft butfree to rotate therewith and provided with a cam having two thrust and two dwell portions, the former adapted to permit of 'the-'reciprocations of 'said plunger in saidcylinders and the latter adapted to hold momentarily said plunger during alternate opening and closingof the openings of 'said rotary valves incommunication with one end of 'each of said cylinders and anterior to further reciprocations of said plunger on said shaft and lroller means engaging said cam, substantially as and for the purposes described.
2. In a rotaryA reciprocating pumping apparatus, two hollow standards united to each other by hol-low casings provided with an inlet and with an outlet registering with an inlet-por-t and an outlet-port provided in said standards, a splined shaft provided withcupshaped Valves revoluble withsaid shaft and having openings in-communication with one endofeach'of two fixed cylinders supported by'said standards, each of :said cylinders at one lof their ends being provided witha gland or stuing-boX, said shaft journaled in end bearings and between said-bearings and walls of said cup-shaped valves are provided recesses or ways and perforations in the walls of said valves toforma lubricating or antifriction-lluid packing between said lvalves and end lbearings forsaid shaft, a plunger secured to=said shaftbutv freeto rotate therewith and provided with a camhaving two thrust "and two dwell portions, the former adapted to permit of `the reciprocations of said plunger in said cylinders and the latter adapted to holdfmomentarilysaid plunger duri-ng alternate opening-and closing of the openings of said rotary valves in communication withone end ofeach of said cylinders and anterior to further `reciprocations of said plunger onsaidshaft and roller means engaging said cam, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I 'have hereunto set my signature in the presence of ltwo subscribing-witnesses.
