Description

No. 660,52l. Patented Oct. 23, I900.
U. A. MORRUW. cnunn. (Application filed Feb. 16, 1900.)
(No Model.)
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE OLIVER A. MORROW, OF WHITE HALL, ILLINOIS.
CHURN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,521, dated October 23, 1900.
Application filed February 16, 1900- Serial No. 5,418 (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OLIVER A. MORRO W, a citizen of the United States, residing at White Hall, in the county of Greene and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ohurns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in churns; and the object of my invention is the provision of a churn of simple, inexpensive, and durable construction by means of which butter may be made from sweet or sour cream in a very short time without fatiguing the operator, thus producing a thoroughly practical churn.
To attain the desired object the invention consists of novel features of construction and combination of parts, substantially as disclosed herein.
Figure 1 represents a side view of my improved churn with the dasher and receptacle shown in section, the churn being in position for use; and Fig. 2 represents a perspective View of the dasher.
In the drawings, A designates the upright frame of my churn, which is secured in position for use to a table or stand by means of the clamp B. Upon the frameA is placed the cranked driving-pulley S, and the frame is provided with the two lateral arms O,which are braced by the vertical bar H, to which also is attached the guide-pulley R. The arms 0 have in their outer ends ball-bearings P, with the sleeve L in the upper arm for adjusting said ball-bearings, set-screw M holding said sleeve in place. Between the arms 0 is located the sleeve N, through which passes the hollow dasher-shaft D, being removable and secured by the set-screw O.
The dasher-shaft D carries the dasher E, removably secured by the set-screw F, and the dasher is circular in form, to the bottom of which is attached a'plurality'of tubes J, placed in such a manner that they all slant backward when the dasher is revolved, their inner ends forming a circle around the opening G. About the cylindrical portion of the dasher is a band E, the upper end of which rests against a shoulder e, the outer margin of which forms the lower end of the tapering portion of the dasher, the thickness of said band being equal to the width of said shoulder. The outer ends of the open-ended tubes J are fastened to the bottoms of the dasher and band, and their inner ends, which are slightly tapering or beveled, are held in contact with one another, as shown. The sleeve N is revolved by means of the belt or band Q, which passes around the upper part of said sleeve, thence over the guide-pulley R, and around the driving-pulley S. The guide-pulley R is mounted in a slot I, which permits of moving it laterally to tighten -the belt or adjust it, as necessity requires.
In operation, the cream being placed in the receptacle K, when the dasher is revolved the air is drawn into the top of the hollow dashershaft D, down through opening G, and out through the tubes J, and forced thence upward through the body of cream and also thoroughly stirring it, thus effecting the churning in a very quick and perfect manner.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the drawings, it is evident that I provide a churn which is of simple and inexpensive construction, which can be operated without tiring the user, and which will churn in a very short time. i
I claim The combination of a dasher-shaft, means for revolving said shaft, a dasher removably secured to said shaft and consisting of a cylindrical body with central passage therethrough through which the said dasher-shaft passes, a band encircling the lower end of said body and cylindrical tubes open at both ends and secured to the said band and bottom of the body, the said tubes being tangentially arranged with relation to the dashershaft with their inner ends beveled and held in contact with one another in a circle concentric with and at a distance from the lower end of the dasher-shaft and their outer ends projecting beyond the periphery of the dasherbody, substantially as herein shown and described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presencepf two witnesses. I
OLIVER A. MORROW.
