SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,335, dated October 23, 1900.

To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, FREDERIO A. PEESO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Punches; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to hand plate-punches v of the class having detachable or interchangeable tools, and is designed particularly for the use of dentists.
The object of my invention is to improve this class of punches by rendering them more efticient,the improvement consisting of means for detachably and adjustably securing the dies or tools to the punch, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, and pointed out in the claims. I
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a hand plate-punch embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a view of said punch, showing the outer face of the jaw which holds the female die. Fig. 3 is a vertical central sectional view of the jaws of said punch. Fig. 4 is an end view of the tool or die holder of the punch detached. Fig. 5 represents a group of three male dies or punches of differentsizes adapted for use with my improved punch and corresponding female dies, the latter being shown in longitudinal central section. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of a male and a female roughening die or tool. Fig. 7 is a View in side elevation of a male and a female loop die or punch, Fig. 8 being an end view of said male loop die or punch, and Fig. 9 an end view of said female loop die or punch.
My improvements may be applied to handpunches of any well-known or suitable form. In the present instance I have shown a punch consisting of two members A and B, pivoted together at a and provided with handles A and B and also with jaws O and D, which are similarly bowed or curved outwardly. To adapt such a punch to the purposes of myinvention, the outer ends of the respective jaws O and D are enlarged into heads 0 and D, which are provided with seats or sockets c and d in alinement with each other. These seats are for the reception of the various tools, which are to be used interchangeably with the punch, one of said seats being adapted forthe detachable attachment of perforators of any size, shape, or kind, and the other seat being adapted for the detachable attachment of socket-pieces corresponding to the perforators with which they are to cooperate.
In the present embodiment of m y invention the seat 0 of the jaw C of the punch is screw threaded for the attachment of a tubular toolholder E, which is provided with an externally-threaded portion E for entering the seat 0, and also with an exposed flattened or squared portion E, by way of which the toolholder may be turned. If desired, the toolholder may be provided with an annular shoul der 6. A perforating or punching tool of any desired size or shape, such as F, which consists of a round shank having a head f, is adapted to be placed in the tool-holder E, the head of the tool resting against the inner end of the tool-holder. A set-screw or plug G, screwing into the outer end of the seat 0, is employed for securelyholding the toolin'place by hearing against its head.
The socket-piece H consists in this instance of a tubular shank having a conical portion 11, adapted to enter the seat 01 of the implement-jaw D, which seat is made tapering in order that the conical portion of the socketpiece may be securely wedged in place without other fastening.
By means of the construction just described tools of various sizes, shapes, and
kinds may be quickly and easily secured to or removed from the punch for performing a wide variety of work. For instance, a set of plate perforating or punching tools of any desired number and having shanks of the same diameter and with operating ends of different sizes may be used. Such a set is illustrated in Fig. 5, in which only three .pair of tools are shown, each perforator F having acorresponding socket-piece H. A male perforator F, of any given size, may be quickly inserted in the tool-holder E by first removing the set-screw or plug G and subsequently screwing said plug in place again. A corresponding socket-piece H may be secured in its seat in the opposite jaw by simply forcing or wedging it in place. The proper position of the perforator and the socket-piece relatively to each other may be secured byscrewing the tool-holder in or out to the proper degree and then securely setting or looking it by means of the screw-plug G. The perforator may be detached by simply removing the screw-plug G, while the socket-piece may be detached by tapping its outer end, which projects slightly outside the seat.
Plate-rougheners, such as illustrated in Fig. 6, may also be used with the punch. These consist of a roughening-perforator 1, similar to the perforators before described, but having a square point and acorresponding socket-piece I, also similar to those before described, but having a square socket or opening, or a loop-punch, such as shown in Figs. 7, S, and 9, may be used. The perforator J of this pair of tools is provided with a rounded projection j, adapted to coact with a socket-piece J, having a slotj', corresponding to the projectionj of the perforator. The proper relation of the members of these two last-mentioned tools maybe secured by placing the socket-piece in any desired position and then forcing the opposing member into place while the same is loosely held, and finally securing said member by means of the screw G, as before explained.
Other tools without limit may be employed with my improved punch; but it is thought that the examples herein shown and described are sufficient to indicate the wide range of usefulness of my invention. My improvements thus obviate the use of a separate punch or implement for each variety of work to be performed, it being necessary to merely substitute whatever form of tool or set of tools is required.
I claim as my invention 1. The combination in a punch adapted to hold detachable or interchangeable tools, of the two opposite jaws or members each of which is provided with a socket or seat in alinement one with the other, a tubular toolholder having adjustable connection with the socket or seat of one of said jaws, a tool adapted to be removably held by said toolholder, means for securing said tool-holder in any position to which it may be adjusted, and another tool held in the socket or seat of the opposite jaw, whereby the first-mentioned tool may be adjusted toward or away from the opposing tool and firmly locked in position, substantially as described.
2. The combination in ahand plate-punch provided with detachable or interchangeable tools, of a jaw having an internally-threaded seat, a tubular tool-holder having an exteriorly-threaded portion for screwing into said seat, a headed tool adapted to fit in said toolholder, and a set-screw or plug for screwing into said seat for locking said tool-holder and tool in place, substantially as and for the purpose described.
