SASH CORD FASTENER.
(Application filed Apr. 27, 1900.)
.(No Model.)
' WITNESSES INVENTO/i' ATTORNEYS UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE WORTH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
SASHY-CORD FASTEN ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,236, dated October 23, 1900.
Original application filed December '7, 1899, $erial No. 789,478. Divided and this application filed April 27 1900. Serial No.
14,525. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE WORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, (Brooklyn,) in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Cord Fasteners, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which'it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to window-sashes; and the object thereof is to provide a window-sash with suspending devices with which the sash cords or chains are connected and whereby the sash is evenly supported, so that it shall be free at all times to be raised and lowered in a truly vertical path.
The invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claims.
This application is a divisional application and is based upon an original application for patent filed December 7, 1899, Serial No. 739,478.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which like reference characters denote like parts in the several views, Figure 1 is an edge view of a portion of a sash, showing the sash devices constructed according to my invention; and Fig. 2 a vertical section thereof, the several operative elements being shown in full lines.
In the practice of my invention I provide a sash (denoted by the general reference character 3) which is chambered at the edge vertically at 4. A plate 5 is set into the sash 3, directly beneath the chambered portion 4 thereof, and secured in place by a fastening device 6. The plate 5 is provided with a hooked upper end 7, which is directed into thechamber 4. A link member (denoted by the general reference character 8) is provided with a lower transverse end portion 9, which fits the hooked end 7 of the plate Sand is free to turn therein, and with parallel vertical sides 10 and acurved upper transverse end 11, provided with acentral slot 12. the link 8 are provided with cheeks 13, in
which are pivoted side bearings 14 of a piv-v oted plate 15, provided at its upper end with The sides 10 of an inwardly-directed hook 163, (partially shown in full lines in Fig. l and in dotted lines in Fig. 2,) which operate within the chamber 4 and between the sides of the link member 8. i The sashsupporting cord or chain 17 is passed through the slot 12 in the end 11 and engages with the hook 16, and the other end thereof passes upwardly and about any suitable or customary support. (Not shown.) A screw-stud 18 is sunk into the edge of the sash 3, within the lower portion of the chamber 4, and loosely mounted thereon is a frame-shaped device 19, secured in position upon said stud by a washer 20 and a nut 21, and the frame-shaped device 19 is provided at the end with heads 22, in which are journaled end bearings 23 of a roller 24, which is provided with a central peripheral beveled rim 25.
The heads 22 are connected by a circular cross-head 26, which carries a central stud 27, which operates within the chamber 4 and within an opening 28 in the sash 3.
A helical spring 29isimposed upon the'stud 27 and normally projects the frame-shaped device 19 or the upper end thereof, said spring bearing upon the cross-head 26 and the sas 3 adjacent the opening 28.
The rim 25 of the roller 24 bearsoperatively against the side 30 of the window-frame, which is shown partially and in section in Fig. 2, being pressed thereagainst by the spring 29, and thus serves as an antirattler for the sash, causing the same to occupy a rigid position in the window-frame. In operation said rim forms a groove 31 in the side of the frame 30, in which the same moves in the raising and lowering of the sash.
It is understood that the construction above described,em bod ying the sash-s uspension devices and the an tirattler devices, is preferably duplicated upon the other side of the sash,
and a sash provided with the devices hereinbefore described is supported by the sash cords or chains in such manner that the strain of the sash-weights upon the sash through the medium of the sash-cords is always applied vertically, whereby the sash may be positive-' ly and evenly raised or lowered. The rollers 24 cause'the sash to ride vertically in a positive and steady manner and also prevent the jarring and rattling of the sash above described.
I do not limit myself to the specificconstructionand arrangement of parts as herein described, but reserve the right to vary the same within the scope of my invention and the claims hereto appended. H
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. In an improved window-sash, means for connecting the sash cords or chains with the sashes consisting of link members which are pivotally connected at their lower ends in chambers formed in the sides of said sash, the sides of said link members being provided adjacent their upper ends with beads, plates pivoted between said beads by means of end bearings and provided at their upper ends with hooks with which the sash cords or chains are directly connected, and the upper ends of said link members being slotted to allow the passage therethrough of said sash cords or chains, substantially as shown and described.
2. In an improved window-sash, means for connecting the sash cords or' chains with the sashes, consisting of link members which are pivotally connected at their lower ends in
