UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE. I
JOHN W. RAPP, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
FIREPROOF DOOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,223, dated October 23, 1900. Application filed December-13, 1899. Serial No. 740,656. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOHN W. RAPP, a citizen of the United States, residing in the borough of Manhattan, city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fireproof Doors, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to fireproof doors.
I will describe a fireproof door embodying IO my invention and then point out the novel features thereof in the claims.
In the accompanyingdrawings, Figure 1 is, a front view of a fireproof door embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view :5 taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is also a sectional view taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
Similar letters of reference designate corresponding parts in all of the figures.
A represents a door which comprises, os-
sentially, a core a, a metallic front a, and a metallic back a The side and end edges of the door are also covered with metal. The core a is preferably of Wood and is made up in any desired manner. The metallic front and back may be in one piece, suitably.
stamped into shape, or it may be composed of a number of pieces united together. In the drawings I have shown the front as being in one piece. The metallic back is also shown as being in one piece.
In forming the front and back they are each provided with a peripheral flange 0%. When the front and back are applied to thecore, the flanges a are broughttogether and united by fusing by any suitable means. Any other joints that are produced by the meeting of the front and back-as, for example, the joints formed at the corners-are also united by fusing the metal. The Wooden core or filler is then completely inclosed by a metallic casing that is without a seam, thereby preventing any possibility of the core or filler becoming ignited.
The flange a of the front and back'is bent to form an extension 01, Each extension a enters a groove (1, which is provided in the core or filler. Any desired means may be employed for inserting the extensions a in the groove a. If desired, the groove 0. may be dispensed with and the edge of the flange a forced into the core or filler by any suitable means.
What I'claim as my invention is-- 1. A, fireproof door comprising a core or filler and a metallic casing, said casing being without a seam or joint.
2. The combination in a fireproof door, of a core or filler, a metallic front and back for said core flanges provided on said front and back, which flanges extend onto the top, bottom, and side-edges of the core and are fused together.
3. The combination in a fireproof door, of a core or filler, having a groove in its top, bottom, and side edges, a metallic front and back for said core, a flange provided on said front and back, which flanges extend onto the top, bottom, and side edges of the core and are fused together, and an extension on each flange which extends into the said groove.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN W. RAPP.
