'SPARK-ARRESTER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,143, dated October 23 1906.
Application filed March 13, 1900. Serial No. 8,441- (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JOSEPHBLANCHETTE, of Dayton, Hen nepin county, Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spark-Arresters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to spark-arresters; and one object of the invention is to provide a simple inexpensive device particularly adapted for use in connection with a threshingmachine engine to prevent the discharge of sparks from the engine-stack.
A further object is to provide a spark-arrester which can be readily attached to an ordinary engine-stack without the use of any expensive fittings or connections.
The invention consists generally in various constructions and combinations, all as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, Figure l is a vertical section of a spark-arrester embodying my invention, Fig. 2 is a horizontal section on the line so 00 of Fig. 1.
In the drawings, 2 represents the enginestack, cylindrical in form, over the open upper end of which I arrange the spark-arrester. The arrestercomprises a base 3, having a cylindrical opening to receive the upper end of the stack, the Walls of said base being outwardly inclined and provided near their outer edges with an upright annular flange 4, outside of which I arrange a cylindrical screen 5, of wire,
or other suitable material. This screen extends any desired distance above the top of the stack and is provided with a closed cap 6, beneath which is a depending cone 7, having its outwardly-turned edges secured to the edges of said cap. To stiffen the screen 5 and support the weight of the cap thereon, I prefer to provide brace-rods 8 at intervals, connecting the lower edges of the cap and the flange 4. Within the cylindrical screen 5 I provide a second screen 9, having its lower end fitted over the top of the stack and its upper open end terminating at a point opposite the lower edges of the cap 6. The cone 7 projects down into the open end of the screen 9, its inclined surface being spaced from said screen to permit the escape of the sparks that are discharged into the screen from the stack. The upper end of the screen 9 is suitably supported or stayed by rods 10, connecting the lower edges of the cap 6 with a ring 10, provided on the upper end of said screen. As the sparks pass up into the inner screen from the stack they will strike the inclined surface of the cone 7 and be deflected thereby into the space between the screens 5 and 9 and will fall down into the base.
To permit the ready removal of the cinders and other refuse material that accumulates in the base, I prefer to provide dischargeopenings 11 in the walls thereof, covered by hinged doors 12, which may be readily opened to permit the space between the screens to be thoroughly cleaned. The top of the sparkarrester being closed by the cap' 7, all the products of combustion discharged from the engine-stack and passing up into the inner screen will strike the inclined surface of the cone and be deflected into the space between the screens. Should any of the small sparks be carried through the meshes of the inner screen, they will be put out before escaping through the outer screen.
In various ways the details of the construction of my improved spark-arrester may be modified by any one skilled in the art, and I therefore do not wish to be confined to the specific construction herein set forth.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent A spark-arrester, comprising a base adapted to telescope with the top of a smoke-stack and having flaring walls provided with dischargeopenings 11, doors 12 normally closingsaid openings, a flange 4 forming a vertical continuation of said flaring Walls, a cylindrical screen 5 fitting over said flange, a closed cap 6 covering and inclosing the top of said screen, an imperforate deflector within said cap having a gutter-shaped base adapted to clamp the upper edge of said screen between its edge and the edge of said cap, said deflector having also a conical depending portion adapted to deflect the products of combustion toward its curved base, brace-rodsS connecting the base of said deflector and said cap with said In witness whereof I have hereunto set my flange 4, a screen 9 concentric with said screen hand this 5th day of March, 1900. 5 and havinga lower end adapted'to telescope his with the top of the stack; and an open upper JOSEPH BLANGI-IETTE. 5' end wherein the conical portion of said demark flector depends and stay-rods 1O connecting In presence of the top of said screen 9 and the base of said THEO.
