IVILLIAM J. BURROW, OF PLYMOUTH, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO THE DAISY MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 660,070, dated October 16, 1900- Applcatl filed January 4, 1900. Serial No. 300. (No model.)
To @ZZ whom, t may concern: Fig. 6 is a detail in perspective of the rear Be it known that I, W'ILLIAMJ. BURROW,a end of the pivoted extension of the stock, citizen of the United States, residing at Plymother parts `being broken away, said figure outh, in the county of Wayne and State of showing the recess or channel therein which 55 5 Michigan, have invented certain new and usereceives the curved reinforcing-plate attached fullmprovements in Air-Rifles; and I do deto the inner wall of the rear end of the false clare the following to be a full, clear, and exact barrel. description of the invention, such as will en- Referring to the characters of reference, l able others skilled in the art to which it apdesignates the false barrel, shaped to form an 6o 1o pertains to make and use the same, reference air-chamber 2 therein at its rear end and havbeing had to the accompanying drawings, and ingv in its 'forward end a true barrel (not to the figures of reference marked thereon, shown) adapted to convey the projectile in a which form a part of this specilication. manner common and Well known in the art.
This invention relates to air-guns of the Passing rearwardly through the air-chamber 65 15 breakdown pattern; and it consists in the 2 is a piston-rod 3, carrying at its forward construction and arrangement of parts hereend a piston (not shown) adapted to reciproinafter fully set forth, and pointed out parcate within the air-chamber and create suinticularly in the claims. cient pressure therein to expel the project-ile The object of theinvention is to produce an from the true barrel of the gun in a manner 7o zo air-gun of the class described in which the well understood. Surrounding the piston-rod arrangement is such as to provide for attach- 3 is a coiled spring 4, whose forward end ening the rear end of the false barrel to the pivgages the piston. oted extension of the stock in a simple and The false barrel l at its rear end is open permanent manner, so that said stock extenon its under face, as shown at 5 in Fig. 5. 75 25 sion shall lie within and form a complemen- The stock 6 is provided with the opposed tary portion of the false barrel at its rear end side plates 7, between which the extension 8 and at the same time afford ashoulder against of the stock is pivoted, as at 9. Said pivoted which the vspring which projects the piston extension of the stock is provided with a formay be compressed, and to provide a lock at wardly-projecting under portion 10, adapted 8o 3o the rear end of the false barrel which serves to lie within and fill the opening 5 in the unto retain said barrel in position upon said exder face of the false barrel and having at its tension of the stock. forward end a groove or channelll, (see Fig. The above object is attained by the forma- 2,) adapted to receive the wall of said barrel tion and association of parts illustrated in at the forward end of said opening, so as to 85 3, 5 the accompanying drawings, in whichsecurely lock the extension 10 of the stock at Figure 1 is a general view, in side elevation, its forward end to the false barrel. The pivof an air-gun embodying my invention. Fig. oted extension of the stock carries the trig- 2 is an enlarged detail, in side elevation, of ger-guard l2 and the trigger 13. Formed in arportion of the stock and its pivoted extenthe extension 8 of the stock at the point of 9o 4o sion, together with the spring for projecting termination of the rear end of the false barthe piston and the piston-rod passing thererel is a recess or channel 14, which occupies through. Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse the opposite sides of said extension and eX- section as on line 3 3 of Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a tends in a curved line across the top thereof,
horizontal section through the rear end of the so as to conform to the shape of the false bar- 95 4.5 false barrel, showing the pivoted extension of rel. Secured Within the rear end of the barthe stock in plan lying therein. Fig. 5 is an rel l is a curved reinforcing-plate 15, which inverted plan of the forward end of the exstands in relief from the inner wall of said tension of the stock and the rear end of the barrel and is adapted to lie within the recess false barrel, showing the opening in the unor channel le of thestock extension, the forroo 5o der side of said barrel adapted to be filled ward edge of said reinforcing-plate engaging and closed by the extension of the stock. the forward shoulder or margin 16 of said recess, thereby rmly holding-the false bar-rel in place against the forward longitudinal thrust exerted bythe piston when driven by the spring4 in the act of discharging the gun. To secure the rear end of the false barrel properly in place on the stock extension 8, a
screw 17 is passed through said parts, as
clearly shown in Fig. 3.
To the plates 7 of the stock is pivoted at 18 the rear end of a link 19, whose forward end engages the hook 2O on the rear end of the piston-rod. Upon the forward end of the stock extension, within the barrel, is a vertical shoulder 2l, against which the rear end of the spring 4 bears. By breaking down the barrel, as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 2, the link 19 draws the piston-rod rearwardly, so as to compress the spring 4 between 'the piston and the shoulder 21 of the stock extension, at the same time causing the hook of the piston-rod to be engaged and retained by the trigger 13. The barrel is then thrown back to the locked position and the gun is ready forring, the piston being discharged bydrawing upon the trigger,so as to disengage it from the hook of the piston-rod.
Having thusfully set forth myinvention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an air-gun, the combination of the stock, the stock extension pivoted thereto and having a forwardly-projecting portion, the false barrel having an opening in its under side at its rear end, said extension of the stock lyingin and closing said opening, the forward end of said extension having means for engagement with the wall of said barrel-on its under side so as to look said parts when forced together.
2. In an air-gun, the combination of the stock, the stock extension pivoted thereto, the false barrel adapted to embrace the upper portion of said extension of the stock and having an opening in its under wall, said eXtension lying in an opening in the underside of said barrel and forming a complementary portion of the Wall thereof, a shoulder upon the rear end of said extension and a projection upon the inner face of the barrel, adapted to engage said shoulder.
3. In an air-gun, the combination of the stock having side plates, the extension of the stock pivoted between said plates, the barrel mounted upon said extension, a recess formed in the rear end of the extension and a reinforcing-plate upon the inner Wall of the rear end of the barrel adapted to lie in said recess.
4. In an air-gun, the combination of the stock, the stock extension pvoted thereto, said extension having at its forward end means for attachment to the barrel and having a vertical shoulder projecting within the barrel, the piston-projecting spring having its rear end bearing against said shoulder and means for compressing and releasing said spring.
In testimony whereof I sign this specication in the presence of two witnesses.
