Specification of Letters hatent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD C. HOUGH, a

citizen of the United States of America,

residing at Plymouth, in the county of ll ayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Pea-Shooting and Pop Guns, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The invention relates to that type of pop guns in which a cork is fitted into the muzzle of the barrel and is expelled with a loud report, by spring-developed air pressure. It is usual to attach the cork to the gun by a short string, as it is not used for a projectile but only to make a noise. However, it is necessary for expulsion of the cork, to provide a spring-pressed plunger, which is released by a trigger in a similar manner to a projectile-firing air gun.

It is the object of the invention to utilize the construction just described for the further function of firing light projectiles, such as peas, and to this end the invention comprises means for adapting the pop gun for the firing of such projectiles, and more specifically, in the construction of a yieldable bushing for insertion in the barrel and forming a seat for the pea.

In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the gun as usedfor a pop gun; and Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section through the muzzle end of the barrel, showing the pea-shooting attachment.

A is the barrel of the pop gun, B is the cork for fitting in said barrel and which is attached by a string C thereto, D is the lever, and E the trigger for respectively compressing and releasing the spring plunger (not shown), which iurnishes the compressed air for expelling the cork.

To convert this pop gun into a projectilei firing gun, a bushing F is provided, which is adapted to be inserted in the muzzle end i of the barrel, to reduce its size sufliciently Patented Oct. 20, 1914.

for receiving the projectile, the bushing having a. bore extending therethrough. This bushingis also preferably formed of a resilientcompressible material, such as rubher, which will yield to receive the pea or other slightly irregular projectile that is of somewhat greater diameter than the bushing bore. Thus, when a pea, or other like projectile, is pressed into the bore of the bushing it will form an air-tight seal, so that the compressed air developed by the release of the plunger will expel the said projectile with considerable force.

The attachment does not in any way interfere with the function of the gun as a pop gun, for it is only necessaryto remove the bushing and insert the cork.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. The combination with an air gun barrel, of a bushin with the muzzle or the barrel and provided with a compressible resilient seat for a projectile, there being a bore leading from said seat through said bushing, and the latter:

detachably engageable I when in engagement with the muzzle being stationary in relation thereto.

2. The combination withan air pop gun and a cork detachably insertible in the muzzle ofthe barrel, fa bushing for alternative engagement with the muzzle of said barrel, said bushing being formed of a resilient compressible material and provided with an expansible seat for receiving a projectile, there being a bore leading from said seat through said bushing, and, the latter a when in engagement with the muzzle being stationary in relation thereto.
