To all 1071,0711 it may concern.-
Be it known that I, HUGO LENTZ, a citizen of Germany, residing at Briinn, in the Province of Mahren, Austria-Hungary, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valve-Gear; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to a novel construction in a valve-gear for steam-engines for controlling the inlet and exhaust valves of an engine, the object being to providea device which will be precise and simple in construction and operation; and it consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
My present invention is particularly adapted to puppet-valve engines, and is comparatively simple and noiseless and insures safety and economy, besides having a great regulating efficiency and allowing high speed.
In the accompanying drawings, illustrating my invention, Figure 1 shows a vertical section of my valve-gear and portions of a steannengine, taken on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2, showing the connection between the eccentric for operating an inlet-valve and the regulator for changing the lead and throw of said eccentric. Fig. 4 is a section on the line l 4. of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional View on the line 5 5 of Fig. 6, showing a modified form of connection between the eccentrics and the regulator. Fig. 6 is a detail View, partly in section and partly in elevation, showing said connection shown in Fig. 5. Fig. 7 shows my valve-gear as applied to vertical engines.
Referring now to said drawings, A indicates a shaft geared to the main shaft of the engine. Connected with said shaft A are two sets of eccentrics, one set E B controlling the admission or inlet valves of the engine and the other set C C controlling the exhaustvalves of said engine. Said eccentrics O C are rigid on said shaft A, being secured in any suitable manner, while said eccentrics B B, controlling the admission or inlet valves, are slidingly mounted on blocks D D, rigidly secured to said shaft A, said eccentric being Serial No. 721.156. .110 model.)
provided with slots of greater length than said blocks adapted to receive the latter. Said eccentrics B B are controlled bya speed regulator or governor I, preferably of the form shown and described in my application for Letters Patent of the United States allowed April 5, 1899. The connection of said eccentrics B B with said speed regulator or governor I can be made in various ways. shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and 4:, each eccentric B is provided with a slot E, extending transversely to the slot in which the block D moves and in which a block F slides. Said block F carries a pin G, which is connected with the inertia-disk H of said regulator I on said shaft A and is shifted thereby, thus changing the lead and throw of said eccentric, or, as shown in Figs. 5and 6, in place of the slot E and block F a link F maybe used,which is secured. at one end to said eccentric B and at its other end to said inertia-disk H by means of bolts G and G Said eccentrics B B are connected with the inlet valves J of the engine by means of the eccentric-rods K and the eccentrics C C are connected with the exhaustvalves by means of the eccentric rods L. Each of said blocks D is so mounted on said shaft A that in the moment when the valve J, connected with the eccentric B thereon, is opened where the resistance is greatest the eccentric-rod K stands perpendicular to said block D, as shown in Fig. 1, and therefore the reaction from the inlet-valve is effected in a direction perpendicular to said block D and is obviously entirely taken up by the latter.
A cam M is pivotally mounted in a stand N on each of the inlet-valve casings by means of a bolt 0 and is connected with the rod K by means of a bolt P, receiving an oscillating or rocking motion from said rod K. From said cam M the admission or inlet valve J receives its motion in the following manner: The valve-rod Q, which carries said valve J, also carries a hollow cylindrical box R. Said box, which is guided in said stand N, carries a roller S and is forced in a direction to close said valve J by means of a spring T, thereby bringing said roller S into engagement with the cam-face of said cam M, which consists of the thumb U and circular part U, whose center is the bolt 0. As long as said roller haust valves.
S rests upon the circular part U of said cam M the valve J is closed; but as soon as said cam turns so as to bring the thumb U into contact with said roller S the latter, and with it the box R, rod Q, and valve J, is forced in a direction to open the latter. Said box R is provided with slots V, through which said cam M enters. Said thumb U is so formed as to insure sudden and smooth or noiseless seating of the inlet-valve.
A stud may obviously be substituted for the roller 8.
The above-described mechanism is also used for operating the exhaust-valves, the cocentric-rod L imparting motion to cam M, thereby opening and closing the exhaustvalve (not shown) which is carried by the valve-stem B.
Fig. 7 shows my valve-gear applied to vertical engines. In this class of engines each cam can control two admission or two ex- In the instance illustrated the cam M, having two thumbs U U, engaging rollers S S and operated by the eccentric-rod K, controls two admission-valves, while the cam M, operated by the eccentric-rod L and having two thumbs U U, engaging rollers S S, operates the exhaust-valves.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a steam-engine, the combination with eccentrics mounted upon a revoluble member, inlet and exhaust valves on said engine, stems on said valves and springs engaging said valve-stems to hold said valves normally closed, of cams pivotally mounted on rigid parts of the engine and connected with said eccentrics, adapted to engage said valvestems to open said valves, each of said cams being provided with a curved portion having the pivot as a center, and a projecting portion, substantially as described. I
2. In a steam-engine, the combination with eccentrics mounted upon a revoluble member, inlet and exhaust valves on said engine, stems on said valves and springs engaging said valve-stems to hold same normally closed, of cams pivotally mounted on rigid parts of the engine and connected directly with said eccentrics, and each provided with a face curved partially on an are having the pivot of said cam as a center, and a projecting thumb, said cams being adapted to engage vsaid valve-stems to open said valves when said thumb portions of said eccentrics are brought into contact with said valves, substantially as described.
3. In a steam-engine, the combination with eccentrics slidingly mounted on a rotating part of the engine, a regulator connected with and adapted to shift said eccentrics, of inletvalves, valve-stems thereon, cams pivotally mounted on rigid parts of the engine and adapted to project into the paths of the valvestems, devices carried by said valve-stems in said valve-stems, and antifriction-rollers,
pivotally mounted in said recesses, of cams pivotally mounted upon rigid parts of said engine and projecting into said recesses in said valve-stems and engaging said antifriction-rollers, said cams being adapted to open said valves against the action of said springs,
, and connection between said cams and a moving part of the engine to impart motion to said cams.
