UNITED STATES PATENT Prion,
HARRY J. SMITH, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
BICYCLE.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 659,833, dated October 16, 1900. Application filed September 12, 1899. Serial No. 730,233. (No model.)
To all whom, zit mar/7; concern:
Be it known thatI, HARRY J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bicycles, of which the following is a full and complete specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in bicycles and similar vehicles, and the object thereof is to so construct and adapt a portion of the tubular frame so that a tire-inflation pump or other accessory or suitable article may be carried therein and readily removed therefrom.
The accompanying drawing represents a sectional side elevation of a portion of the frame of a bicycle constructed according to my invention and provided with a detachable seat-support, parts thereof being shown in full lines.
In the practice of my invention and in adapting the same to a bicycle I provide a bicycle in which 1 and 5 represent those parts of the tubular frame which are ordinarily connected with the crank-hanger 6 thereof, and t3 and '7 those parts of the frame which respectively connect with the upper end of the upright 8, which projects upwardly from the crank -l1anger 6 and receives the seatsupport in the manner hereinafter described.
In the lower end of the frame upright S I fix a plug 9, and secured thereto at one end is a coiled spring 10. Supported upon the coiled spring 10 I have shown for purpose of illustration an inflation-pump 11, which is thus housed within the upright 8. Passed into the uprightSand surrounding pump 11 is a seat-support tube 12, and the upper end of the frame member 8 is provided with a clamping-ring 13, by means of which it may be tightened about the seat-support tube 12.
The seat-support which I employ comprises an angular rod 14, one end of which is provided with a recess or bore 15, in which is seated a screw-plug l6 and a slidable lockingpin 17, which is spring-projected by means of a coiled spring 18 imposed between the same and the screw-plug 16. The seat-support tube 12 is provided with a slot at one side, through which the locking-pin 17 may be projected by the spring 18 when the end of the seat-support rod 14 is inserted into said tube. In this position the seat-support rod 14 effectively closes the tube 12, retaining the pump 11 in position therein, the spring 10 exercising a constant projecting tension upon the lower portion of said pump, whereby the latter is firmly bound between the said spring and the inner end of the seatsupport 1e. When it is desired to withdraw the pump 11 from the frame member 8, the locking-pin 17 is forced inwardlyagainst the tension of the spring 18, thus releasing it from the slot in the seat-support tube 12, in which it normally operates, and the seat-support rod 14, or the inner end thereof, may thus be withdrawn from the tube 12 and the spring 10 will project the pump 11 upwardly into such position that it may be grasped and withdrawn from the tubular frame member 8.
It is evident that a plurality of various accessories may, if desired, be housed and carried within the tubular frame member 8, the pump 11 being simply shown for purpose of illustration. It is further evident that the construction above described may be applied to the various other parts of the tubular frame of the bicycle or similar vehicle.
By means of the construction above described the seat-support 14: may be readily detached from its seat-supporting tube 12, allowing access interiorly of the tubular frame member 8, without affecting the adjustment of the supporting-tube 12 in said tubular member 8, whichadjustment is maintained by the clamping-ring 13.
I do not limit myself to the particular construction and arrangement of parts herein described, but reserve-the right to vary the same Within the scope of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patentl. The combination with a tubular member of the frame of a bicycle or similar vehiole, of a tubular support adjustably mounted in said member and open at both ends, a seat-support detachably connected with said tubular support and forming a closure for the upper end thereof, said support being adapted to receive an air-pump which when in position therein, projects from the lower end thereof, substantially as shown and described.
2. The combination with a tubular member of the frame of a bicycle or similar vehicle, of a tubular support adj ustably mounted therein and open at both ends, a seat-support provided with a shank adapted to enter the upper end of said tubular support, and a spring-operated locking device for connect-v ing the shank of the seat-support with said tubular support, said tubular member being adapted to receive a tension device, and said tubular support an air-pump, which when in position projects through the lower end thereof and bears on said tension device, substantially as shown and described.
3. The combination with a tubular member of the frame of.a bicycle or similar vehicle, of a tension device in the inner end of said member, an adjustable tubular support mounted in said member and projecting therefrom and open at both ends, and a seat-support which is adapted to be detachably connected with and to close the outer end of said tubular support, said tubular support being adapted to receive an air-pump, one end of which projects through the lower open end end thereof, an adjustable tubular supportmounted therein and projecting therefrom and open at both ends, a seat-support provided with a shank which is adapted to enter the outer end of the tubular support and to close the same, and means for detachably connecting the shank of the seat-support with said tubular support, said tubular member and said tubular support being adapted to re ceive an air-pu mp, one end of which is pressed upon said tension device by the shank of the seat-support, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of the subscribing witnesses, this 8th day of September, 1899.
HARRY J. SMITH.
