Description

y nitrh gieten @anni @ft-rr'I WILLIAM WEBB, CF WATERBURY, CONNECTICUT, AssICNoR To THE SCVILLEM'ANUFCTURING COMPANY, SAME PLACE. p Leners Palm No. 65,912, dated Jun@ 1s, 1867. i
' IMPROVEMENT IN. HINGES -FOR LAMP-BURNERS.
TO ALL WHOM IT MAY CONCERN:A s v Be it known that I, W'ILLIAM WEBB, of Waterbury, in the count-y of New Haven, and State ofConnecticut, Vhave invented'a new and improved Hinge; and I do hereby decl-.rre that the following is a full, clear', and exact deseriptionthereof, whiehwill enable thoseI .skilled in the nrt to make :1nd use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming port of this specification.
The resent invention relates to a new and iin )roved hinwe es :ecinllv dcsirfned to be used for hinein" the D 7 v D C a holders for the chimneys of coal-oil or kerosene lamps to the tops of such lamps; 'and this invention consists in so constructingthesaid hinge ns to produce al stop or rest for the chimney-holder ns it is swung up nd away from the wick-tube for'trimming or lighting theoviclt, or for :my other reason. In `the :iccompanying plate ot' drawings my improvedhinge is illustratedlEiggureyl being nn enlarged perspective view of the sinne detached from the top of n lmnp. Figure 2, nside view of a lump top hnvingits chimney-holder hinged to it with n hinge made according to the'present invention; and Figures 3 and 4, detail 'views of the plates from which the hinge is made. A, in the drawings, represents the hingefand B nnd'C its two leaves or wings, thz'tt are arranged 1nd hung up'on a common pin, a, so :is to be opened from and closed upon eachother, asin ordinary hinges. One of these leaves C is provided with al portion or arm, D. projecting from its butt, which arm is made of one and the saine piece of metal with the 'leaf C, and, when the' hinge is used for hinging the chimney-holder of zr lamp to its top or cap, act-s asa stop-or restV for the saidehimney-holder as it is swung up and awayfrom the lamp top to enable the vv/icl:V of thelnmp to be trimmed or lighted, or for any other desired rca-son. In fig. 3 is shown the plate or sheet of which the leaf B of the hinge is composed, this platel beingl lrst cnt out in the form shown, and then folded by its-two ends over and uponeach other at its centre line, forming :1t its folded edge the necessary tube shape to receive the pin or spindle a ofthe hinge. The plete shown in fig. 4 constitutes the other leaf C of the hinge when folded by its `ends over and upon each other, the portion I of" such plate, embraced between its shouldered ends J, forming the tlibe or sleeve for the hinge-pin, :1nd the projecting stop-piece or arm the restffor the chimney-holder when swung up so as to come to n bearing upon the same, the leaf C otthe hinge thus provided -with n projecting stop-piece being secured or xed to the upper edge of the lamp top, and the other leaf, r
B, to the under edge ot' the chimney-holder portion ofsuch top. By bending the projecting stoppiece of the hingeA either up or down, the extent to which the chimney-holder can be swung up from the lamp top may be .regulated at pleasure, as is obvious withoutany `further explanation.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The hinge A, having one of its leaves provided with :n'projecting rest or stop-piece, D, and made substantially vas herein described and for'the purpose specified. V
WILLIAM WEBB.
