TO ALL WEIOM I'l MAY CONCERN:
Beit known that I, AMOS NUDD, of Waupun, in the county of Fond du Lac, and Sta-te of Wisconsin, have invented certainnew and useful improvements in Sounding-Boards for Melodeonsac. and I do hereby declare that the following is a full1 clear, and exact description thereof', reference being had to the accompanying drawings, making part of this spccitication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, like letters indicating like parts wherever they occur.
To enable others skilled in thc art to construct and use the invention, I Will proceed to describe it.
My invention consists in applying to melodeons and all similar reed instruments a sounding-board or box, for the purpose of rendering"r thc tone of the instrument more musical than when constructed in the ordinary manner.v
Figure 1 is a top plan view witlnthe cover removed.
Figure 2 is a. transverse vertical section, taken on the line ofc: :z: of iig. l, with the cover closed.
Figure 3 is a section ofthe improvement slightly modified in its application.V
A represents the ease of an ordinary melodeon or similar instrument. B represents the key-board or portion occupied by the keys at the front. C represents my improvement, which consists of a box made of thin, light wood, and having one or more openings, Z1, in its top. This box is glued together firmly, so that there shall be no jar between its parts where united, aud should be made of fine, straight-grained, sonorous wood, such as cedar or pine, though other kinds may be used, es experience shall dictate. This box thus constructed is placed upon the key-hoard in the top of the case, in rea-r of the bank of keys', as shown in fig. 2. It issecured to the board B by means oi' two small blocks, a, placed one under each edge at the centre, as indicated by the dotted lines in iig. l, and as shown in section in fig. f2. If desired, it may be modified, as shown in iig. ,3, in which case the box has no bottom, but instead has'its loven edge glued or otherwise secured direct to thc keyboard B.
When the reeds are vibrated by the passage of the air, the vibration -is imparted to the box C also, which Operates like the shell of a violin, and'greatly soffensand mellons the tone of the instrument, rendering it less` harsh and more finte-like.
It is obvious that this improvement may be applied to hnrmonlums, and all similar reed instruments, as well as to melodeons, with like results.
Having thus described my invention, what I claimkis- In combination with the key-board of a melodeon or similar reed instrument, I claim the sounding-box C, arranged as shown and described.
AMOS NUDI).
