CHARLES F. OONOVER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COOLING ATTAQHMENT FOR CONDENSERS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,942, dated October 2, 1900.
Application filed January is, 1900. Serial No. 1.319. kllo model.)
To etZZ whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES F. CONOVER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York city, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooling Attachments for Condensers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention relates to an improved attachment for cooling the condensers of an ice-machine, in which I provide a secondary sprinkling-pipe for throwing water over the lower coils of the said condenser and a hood or shed fastened above the said secondary sprinkler, which is adapted to throw off the water which drips from the pipes above and which has become heated by contact with the said pipes.
Heretofore condensers have been constructed having but one sprinkler for supplying the cold water located above the pipes forming the condenser. The Water as it would leave the sprinkler would be cold; but in its f general side elevation of the condenser,show-.
ing my improvement attached. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 1 lof Fig. 1 looking in the direction indicated by the arrow X.
Similar letters refer to similar parts.
A designates the upper series of condensing-pipes, and A the lower series, connected by the elbow a. B designates uprights securely holding the said series of pipes in an upright position and formed at the base with a flange b, which is fastened to the drip-pan B. The said drip-pan B is adapted to catch the water as it flows down from the pipes, and a drain b, which may be connected to the sewer-pipe, is employed to drain off the water collecting in said pan.
0 designates the sprinkling-pipe, fastened -to the uprights B above the pipesA and connects to a supply-pipe O, which is provided with a valve 0, adapted to shut off or regulate the supply of water into the sprinkler O. A secondary sprinkler D is fastened to the uprights B directly above the second series of pipes A and is connected to the supplypipe 0 by means of the branch D, which is provided with a valve (1 for regulating the flow of water into the said secondary sprinkler D.
Fastened directly above the secondary sprinkler D is a hood E, which is adapted to throw off the water flowing from the pipes above it, so that the said water will not come in contact with the pipes below said hood.
In the operation of my device the valves 0 and cl are opened, allowing the water to flow from the sprinklers G and D. The water as it leaves the sprinkler O is cool; but on coming in contact with the pipes A the action of the gas or liquid in the pipes tends to warm the water, whose function is to keep the pipes cool, thereby condensing the gas Within the pipes. When the water reaches the hood E, it is thrown off and allowed to drip into the pan B and not allowed to come in contact with the pipes A of the lower series, the water being warmand its condensing function being lost. The cold water from the secondary sprinkler D flows down upon the pipes A into the drip-pan B and is led 01f by the drain I).
Previous to this invention the cooling process' was dependent upon the water flowing fromone sprinkler located at the top; but the water by the time it reached the lower pipes was quite warm and incapable of cooling the gases within the lower pipes. It is obvious that my invention overcomes this difficulty and that the condensing of the gas within the condensing-pipes is more complete by the use of my attachment.
Having thus described my invention,'what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In an improved condenser, comprising two series of pipes suitably connected, the com bination with the same, of a distributingpipe suitably perforated for sprinkling water and located above the upper series of pipes,
the lower series, and means for supplying the distributing-pipes with water, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name, in presence of two witnesses, this 10th day of January, 1900.
