RoP 0R CABLE GUIDE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 658,908, dated October 2, 1900. i
Application tiled May 12. 1900.
To cti/Z whom t petty concern.:
Be it known that JOHN H. FENNER, 'late a citizen of the United States, and a resident'of.
Jersey City, New Jersey, did invent certain new and useful Improvements in Rope or Cable Guides, of which the following is a specification.
This invention 4relates to improvements in rope or cable guides designed for use on dredgers and similar situations where the rope from the hoisting-engine or windlass passes over a swinging boom.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and durable construction where the maximum degree of movement shall be allowed to the boom with a minimum degree of friction on the hoisting rope or cable.
To this end the invention comprises a base, a frame rotatably mounted thereon, and guide-pulleys carried thereby at right angles to each other.
The invention further includes the details of construction as hereinafter described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a plan view. Fig. 2 is a side Fig. 3 is a detail view.
In the drawings numeral 3 indicates a baseplate, which is preferably in the shape of an open ring and is provided with lugs 3, having openings by which it may be bolted to the deck of a scow oranalogous place.
4 designates the base portion of a rotary frame which is provided with an angular flange 4a, which rests in a rabbet in the base and is held therein by a removable ring 3b, but is allowed free rotary movement therein. Two upright posts 5 are carried by this rotary plate 4C, and on these are journaled horizontal-disposed guide-pulleys 6, which are arranged directly in line with each other an-d each of which is provided witha rope-groove 6a and a retaining-flange 6b. A yoke 7 connects the tops of the posts. The posts are preferably made removable from the rotary ring by having their lower ends seated in socket-pieces 4C@ and held in place by suitable pins 4nd. The yoke, it will be observed, is also removable by taking out the pins at the top Serial No. 16,509. KNO model.)
of the posts. A supplemental plate 7' is bolted to the rotary plate on one side of the posts, and upon this plate are mounted two vertical webs 8, which have rearwardly-extending portions Sa, rigidly secured to the yoke above referred to. Between these webs is journaled a pulley 9 upon a horizontal axis, the lower edge of this pulley coming approximately in line with the center of the horizontally arranged pulleys before referred to. Lugs or projections 10 extendoutwardly from the vertical webs, preferably at about the inclination of a Vhoisting-boom, and in these lugs are journaled pulleys 11 upon inclined axes lla. These rollers, it will be observed, are elongated cylinders, and thus permit a movement of a rope or cable longitudinally between them, but prevent any lateral motion. In order to prevent the rope slipping down from between the rollers when Ithe cable is slack, a horizontally-disposed roller or pulley 12 is provided.
Having thus described this invention, what is claimed isl. In combination with a base or support, the frame rotatably carried thereby, and the guide-pulleys carried thereby having their axes arranged in diierent planes, substantially as described.
2. In combination with a base, a plate rotatably carried thereby, horizontally-arranged opposing pulleys carried by said plate, and a vertically-disposed guide-pulley having its lower edge arranged in line with the space between said opposing pulleys, substantially as described.
3. In combination with a base, a plate rotatably carried thereby, vertical posts on said rotary plate, opposing pulleys carried by said posts, a yoke connecting said posts at their upper ends, vertically-arranged webs carried by said rotary plate and yoke, and a pulley journaled between said webs, substantially as described.
4t. In combination with a base, a rotary plate thereon, posts carried by said plate, opposing gui'de-pulleys carried by said posts, a yoke connecting the upper ends of said-posts, vertical webs carried by said rotary plate and yoke, a guide-pulley journaled between said IOO Webs adjacent to the horizontal pulleys and cylindrical pulleys journaled in ears at the outer edges of the webs, substantially as described.
5. In combination With a base, a rotary plate thereon, posts carried by said plate, opposing guide-pulleys carried by said posts, a yoke connecting the upper ends of said posts, vertical Webs supported by said plate and yoke, a guide-pulley journaled between said webs, inclined parallel cylindrical rollers journaled at the outer edges of said plates, and a roller journaled at the lower ends of said cylindrical rollers upon a horizontal axis, substantially as described.
6. In combination with a base having an open center with an annular rabbet, a rotary plate having its edge seated in said rabbet, a retaining-ring for holding said rotary plate in said rabbet, and a plurality of angularlydisposed guide-pulleys carried by said plate, substantially as described.
7. In combination with a suitable base or LISENA ALICE FENN ER, Eecutm'x of the estate of John H Fenner.
