To all whom it may concern/.-
Be it known that I, HIRAM K. WHITNER, a citizen of'the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois,have invented a new and useful Improvement in Reversible Balance -Windows, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates more particularly to that type of reversible windows having a detachable stile upon each side of a sash-frame and provided with a pivotal union, whereby said sash-frame and said stiles may be held in en gagementin sashways of a balance-window.
The object of my invention is to supplement the construction shown and described in my application for Letters Patent designated Serial No. 731,906.
My invention consists in a noveliconstruction of the component parts pertaining to a reversible balance-window and differing from said Serial No. 731,906 in features and functions such as developed themselves in a reduction to practice and having proven of practical value, the highest stage of perfection being attained in said reversible balance-window by the introduction of the adjuncts hereinafter shown and described. In a reduction to practice it will be found that the component parts of said reversible window will be held more firmly in their interlocked position centrally in the opening of said window by virtue of the beading and channeling hereinafter fully set forth and by virtue of an L-shaped journal adapted to engage with a journal-bearing of U form. Because of the relative positions held by the two functional limbs pertaining to said L-shaped journal when said sash-frame and said detachable stiles are in alineinent in said improved windows with the beading and channeling registering I have an upright limb in the form of a journal-bead registering with a U -form journal-bearing, and I have a horizontal limb in the form of a pivot-pin projecting through said U -form journal-bearing and through said detachable stile, said upright limb having two functions, it being the base to said pi vot-pin, (the horizontal limb,) and by virtue of its upright position it acts as a journal-lug, inasmuch as said journal-bead stands upon a beveled foot (hereinafter more generally desiguated bevel G) resting upon an elevated journal-bearing, as hereinafter more fully shown, thereby relieving the pivot-pin of all violent shocks while removing the balanced sash-frame in the sashways. The horizontal limb of said L-journal member also has two functions. It is a pivotpin whereby said pivotal-union members are held in engagement, and it is adapted to abut against the pulley-stile in order to hold said component parts pertaining to a reversible balance-window centrally in the opening of said window, and because of said latter function the free end of said horizontal limb will hereinafter be designated the butt-end.
In this application in order to avoid proliXity I confine myself to a preferable method of heading and channeling that has the wide radial heading and the intermediate narrower beading upon the facing edge of the sashframe and the wide longitudinal channeling and the intermediate narrower channel upon the detachable stile. With said beading supplemented by modifications in their construction'l attain functions not otherwise obtainable. This will be manifest by referring to my accompanying drawings, forming part of this my specification, wherein like letters of reference refer to like parts in the various figures; and, moreover, the construction on both sides of said window being preferably similar I illustrate but one side ofa portion of said sash-frame with its detachable stile in engagement in the sashway of a balance window.

Inasmuch as butt-end H must have an unbroken smooth surface in the path of its travel while abutting against the pulley-stile, reference should be had to Fig. 6, wherein it is shown how the recesses c a provide an unbroken path in the line of travel taken by said butt-end H when said balance-window is moved in its so-called vertical plane.
In Fig. 3 the facing edge of a sash-frame shows the radial beads E and F. G is the journal-bead. G is a topmost extreme of said journal-bead widened to conform to the radial bead E. G is a widened metal spur, (more fully shown and described hereinafter with reference to Fig. 7,) said spur being adapted to aid extreme G in giving stability to the horizontal limb H of said L-shaped journal member. Said weight-chain anchorage occupies a relative position in the balance-window that devices of a like nature occupy when securing cords directly to a sash-frame. 7% is a piercing elliptical in form, with its longest diameter upright in said detachable stile and adapted to sleeve with the horizontal limb of the journal member. An ordinary wooden plug temporarily inserted into the space between said horizontal limb and the upper segment of said piercing it will keep the said detachable stile immovable in contact with the sash-frame, inasmuch as said upright limb with said adjunct bevel cannot escape the journal-bearing, while said horizontal limb is obstructed and prevented from rising in said elliptical piercing, thereby making it possible to transport said component parts as a one-piece sash.
In Fig. 6 the recess a extendsthe full width of the sash, inasmuch as it is not in the path of any member requiringa smooth surface at this point. Not so with the recess 0 c. Said sections of said recess not only occupy positions relatively opposed to the interstice members, being in positions 0 C, but they occupy positions on each side of the path of travel of both butt-end H and of middle A, hereinbefore described.
In Fig. 7, E is a metal bead-fender conforming to the radial bead E and holding in pivotal engagement catch Q, provided with a keeper Q. F is a metal bead-fender conforming to the radial bead F. G, G, G and H pertain to said L-shaped journal member, hereinbefore described. I) is a modified buttend of' said horizontal limb, provided with a threaded shank adapted to engage with a not B, whereby said butt-end of said horizontal limb of the L-journal member may be made adjustable. Bevel G is. in engagement with the journal-bearing, with the upright limb of amt said L-journal member wholly in engagement with said journal-bearing of U form, thereby taking all strain off the horizontal limb, which latter in this position is simply an abut-ting member and not a journal member integrally. h is a tapering segment of a dowel, ending in an anchor-fluke N, said dowel It being adapted to be inserted into piercing h, said anchorfluke N being adapted to engage with niche 17,, cut into the wall of said piercing M, whereby the journal-bearing of U form may be anchored to said detachable stile Z. Dowel P inserted into sloping piercing p anchors said L-journal member to said sash-frame as and forms a junction between said L journal member and said widened metal spur G provision being made for the interlocking of elevation h and segment 71 or the engagement of said latter members with the notch formed by the hereinbefore-described bevel G and said metal spur G Dowel P inserted into sloping piercing p anchors bead-fender E. Dowel P inserted into sloping piercing 10 anchors bead-fender F, and catch Q is in engagement with catch-pin q. The latter is in the form of a rivet crossing through the detachable stile Z from side to side just beyond the depth of the longitudinal channel e.
In Fig. 8 catch Q is disengaged from catchpin q, the beading and channeling is disengaged, the journal-bead is withdrawn from said journal-bearing of U form, and the axis of the horizontal limb occupies a more elevated position, together with the component parts pertaining to said sash-frame, inasm uch as said disengaging lateral movements have brought a section of the horizontal limb of said journal member, unbroken in its periphcry, to rest upon said elevation of the journal-bearing of U form. In this position said horizontal limb is made the integral journal. Hence I preferably use the term L-shaped journal member, because of this alternate shifting of said journal function from one limb to the other limb of said journal member. Hence it will be obvious that when the reversed sash is restored to its normal position a broken or beveled portion of said periphery will contact with said elevated journal-bearing, and in view of these contacting surfaces the component parts pertaining to said sash-frame will descend a limited distance by a gravitating force.
In Fig. 9, F is the lower radial bead of the upper (outer) sash-frame. K is the meetingrail. K is the check-lip of said meeting-rail. K is the extension of said check-lip, said check-lip extension having the double function of a weather-strip and a striking-stop, the latter contactingwith detachable stile Z, the function of a weather-strip when in opposition with interstice member s pertaining to parting-strip S.
In Fig. 10, S is a parting-strip holding in fixed engagement interstice member 3 directly in opposition with check-lip K, pertaining to said upper sash.
In Fig. 11, i is a side view of one of the securing-plates pertaining to the journal-bearing of U form. h is the tapering dowel-segment N is the anchor-fluke. h is the segment that divides transversely the primary channeling.
In Fig. 12 my interstice member is shown detached, said member being in positions A and 0 when fixed to the outwardly-facing edge of said detachable stiles, and when said interstice member is fixed to said partingstrip it is designated '8".
In Figs. 13 and 14-, W is my weight-chain anchor, especially adapted to restricted quarters such as are found in the detachable stiles of this type of windows. W is an aperture partially in the periphery and partially in the base-plate of said anchor member, said aperture being adapted to receive the free end of said weight-chain. Visachain-pin. VVare overhanging points adapted to be inserted (forced) into the walls of a three-fourths-inch boring.
I show my bead-fender holding in pivotal engagement catch Q in but one position. It will not be a departure from the spirit of my invention to place said bead-fender at each extreme of said beaded members.
Having thus fully described my invention, I will now in claims point out what is new and novel.
1. In a reversible balance-Window the combination, with a sash-frame and two detachable stiles, of an L-shaped journal member, provided with a bevel-foot, and adapted to engage with a journal-bearing of U form and means whereby said sash and said stiles may be held in relative positions in the opening of said window, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. In a reversible balance-window the com-- bination, with a sash-frame and two detachable stiles, of an L-shaped journal member having a pivot-pin adapted to abut against a pulley-stile, said journal member being provided with a bevel-foot, a journal-bearing of U form adapted to engage with said journal member, apulley-stile provided with a smooth surface in the path of travel of the free end of said horizontal limb and means whereby said sash and said stiles may be held in relative positions in the opening of said window, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
3. In a reversible balance-window, the combination, with a sash-frame and two detachable stiles, of an L-shaped journal member having a pivot-pin adapted to abut against a pulley-stile, said journal member being provided with a bevel-foot, a journal-bearing of U form adapted to engage with said journal member, a pulley-stile provided with relatively-placed recesses adapted to engage with .interstice members of a detachable stile, a
detachable stile having on its outwardly-facing edge three interstice members near the lower extreme and two interstice members near the upper extreme, said interstice memhers being adapted to engage with said recesses at a predetermined point, a predetermined-point indicator secured to a detachable stile and a predetermined-point indicator secured to a sashway-stop and means whereby said reversible window may be balanced in sashways in said window, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
4. In a reversible balance-wint'low, the combination, with a sash-frame and two detachable stiles, of an L-shaped journal member having a pivot-pin provided with an adjustable free end adapted to abut against a pulley-stile, said journal member being provided with a bevel-foot, a journal-bearing of U form adapted to engage with said journal member, a pulley-stile provided with a smooth surface in the path of travel of the free end of said pivot-pin, said sash-frame being provided with a bead-fender having in pivotal engagement a catch, said catch being provided with a keeper, said detachable stile being provided with a catch-pin adapted to engage with said catch as a means whereby said sashframe and said detachble stiles may be immovably interlocked, and means whereby said reversible window may be balanced in sashways, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
5. Ina reversible balance-window the combination with a sash-frame and two detachable stiles, of an L-shaped journal member having a pivot-pin adapted to abut against a pulley-stile, said journal member being provided with a bevel-foot, a journal-bearing of U form adapted to engage with said journal member, said journal-bearing being provided with a tapering dowel having an anchor-fluke adapted to engage with the walls of an elliptical piercing in a detachable stile, a detachable stile provided with a piercing elliptical in form and adapted to hold in fixed engagement said dowel and said fluke, said piercing being adapted to receive said pivot-pin pertaining to said L-shaped journal member, substantially as and forthe purpose set forth.
6. In a reversible balance-window, the combination, with a sash-frame and two detachable stiles, of an L-shaped journal member having an upright limb and a pivot-pin and provided with a bevel-foot, said upright limb being in the form ofajournal-bead and adapted to engage with a journal-channel, said pivot-pin being provided with a butt-end adapted to project through a piercing in a detachable stile, thereby enabling said pivotpin to abut against a pulley-stile, a journalbearing of U form adapted to engage with said upright limb and with said bevel pertaining to said journal member, said journalbearing being provided with a tapering dowel having an anchor-fluke adapted to be inserted in said piercing, a detachable stileprovided with a piercing elliptical in form hav-.
ing a niche in the walls of said piercing adapted to engage with said anchor-fluke and means whereby said reversible window maybe balanced in sashways in said window, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
7. In a reversible balance-window,the combination, with a sash-frame and two detachable stiles, of an L-shaped journal member having an upright limb and a pivot-pin and provided with a bevel-foot, said upright limb being in the form of a journal-bead, its topmost extreme being widened in conformity with a radial bead pertaining to said sashframe, said journal member being provided with a dowel adapted to engage with a sloping piercing in said sash-frame as a means whereby said journal member may be fixed to the facing edge of said sash-frame, a journal-bearing of U form adapted to engage with saidjournal member and means whereby said sash and said stiles may be balanced in sash ways in said window, substantiallyas and for the purpose set forth.
8. In areversible balance-window, the combination, with a sash-frame and two detachable stiles, of an L-shaped journal member having an upright limb and a pivot-pin and provided with a bevel-foot, said upright limb being in the form of a journal-bead, its topmost extreme being widened in conformity with the radial bead pertaining to said sashframe, a sash-frame provided with a metal bead-fender secured to the extreme of its facing edge, said metal bead-fender conforming to the shape of said radial bead pertaining to said sash-frame as a means whereby a radial head may be fitted to the facing edge of said sash-frame in alternate sections of metal and of wood, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
9. In a reversible balance-window, the combination, with a sash-frame and two detachable stiles, of an L-shaped journal member having an upright limb and a pivot-pin and provided with a bevel-foot, said upright limb being in the form of a journal-bead, its topmost extreme being widened in conformity with a radial head pertaining to the sasht'rame, a sash-frame having a metal beadfender conforming to the shape of said radial bead, said bead-fender having in pivotal engagement a catch adapted to engage with said detachable stile, and being provided with a keeper, a detachable stile provided with a catch-pin adapted to engage with said catch as a means whereby said detachable stile may be securely locked to said sash-frame, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
10. In a reversible balance-window, the combination, with a sash-frame and two detachable stiles, of an L-shaped journal member adapt-ed to engage with a journal-bearing of U form, a journal-bearing of U form having an elevated bearing and provided with a dowel adapted to engage with a detachable stile, a detachable stile provided with a piercing adapted to engage with said dowel, said detachable stile being provided with another piercing adapted to hold in fixed engagement IIO pose set forth.
11. In a reversible balance-Window, the combination, with a sash-frame and two detachable stiles, of an L-shaped journal member having an upright limb in the form of a journal-bead and a horizontal limb in the form of a pivot-pin, said journal member having a bevel, said pivot-pin being provided at its free endwith a thread ed stem adapted to engage with a nut, a nut. adapted to engage with the free end of said pivot-pin as a means whereby said sash-frame and said stiles may be held adj ustably in the center of the opening of said window, substantially as and for the purpose set forth,
12. In a balance-window, the combination, a sash-frame X, a detachable stile Z, a pulley-stile Y, a journal-bearing of U form having an elevated bearing h, adapted to engage with an L journal member, an L journal member having a journal-bead G provided with a bevel G and having a horizontallimb H provided With'a butt-end H adapted to engage with said pulley-stile.
13. In a balance-window, the combination, a sash-frame X, a detachable stile Z having interstice members fixed to its outwardly-facing edge, three of said members being fixed in a relative position designated A, two of said members being fixed in a relative position designated C, a journal-bearing of U form having an elevated bearing h adapted to engage with an L journal member, an L journal member being provided with a buttend H adapted to engage with a pulley-stile, a pulley-stile Y provided with recess aand two recesses c, 0 adapted to engage with interstice members being in' positions A and O, C respectively at predetermined points.
14. In a balance-Window, the combination, a sash-frame X, a detachable stile Z provided with a predetermined-point indicator T and having an elliptical-shaped piercing h, said detachable stile Z being provided with interstice members fixed to its outwardly-facing edge in positions A and C, a journal-bearing of U form having an elevated bearing h, a journal member being provided with a buttend H adapted to engage with a pulley-stile, a pulley-stile Y being provided with recess a, and recess 0 adapted to engage with said interstice members fixed in relative positions A and C, a casing-stop provided with predetermined-point indicator 6.
15. In a balance-Window, the combination, a sash-frame X having in fixed engagement ajournal member, an L-shaped journal member, a detachable stile Z having in fixed engagement a journal-bearing, a journal-bearing of U form in fixed engagement in a piercing 71 a butt-end H protruding through said piercing 7L and adapted to engage with a pulley-stile, a pulley-stile Y and a parting-strip S, said parting-strip being provided with an interstice member s.
16. In a balance-window, the combination, a sash-frame X having in fixed engagement an L-shaped journal member, an L-shaped journal member adapted to engage with a journal-bearing, a detachable stile Z having an elliptical-shaped piercing k provided with a niche it cut in the wall of said piercing, a journal-bearing of U form having a dowel h adapted to be inserted in said piercing h, said dowel being provided with an anchor-fluke N, said anchor-fluke beingadapted to engage with said niche n.
17. In a balance-window, the combination, a sash-frame X having a piercingp, a detachable stile Z provided with a journal-channel g, an L-shapedjournal member havingajonrnal-bead G and a horizontal limb H, said L- shaped journal member being provided with a dowel P adapted to be fixedly engaged with said piercing p, a journal-bearing of U form having metal retaining-plates i and 1' adapted to be inset in the facing edge of said detachable stile Z.

In a balance-Window, the combination, a sash-frame X provided with a piercing p a detachable stile Z, an L-shaped journal member,ajonrnal-bearingof U form, abeadfender F having a dowel P adapted to engage with said piercing 19 19. In a balance-Window, the combination, a sash-frame X provided with a piercing p, a detachable stile Z provided with a catch-pin q, a bead-"fender E having a catch Q and provided with a dowel P having in fixed engagement keeper Q, said catch Q being adapted to engage with said catch-pin q and said dowel P being adapted to engage with said piercing p.
20. The combination, a sash-frame, a detachable stile, a bead-fender having in pivotal engagement catch Q and provided with a dowelsaid dowel being adapted to hold in fixed engagement keeper Q, and a catch-pin q adapted to engage with said catch.
21. In a balance-Window, the combination, a sash-frame provided with a meeting-rail K, a check-lip extension K and provided with a heading F, a parting-strip S providedwith an interstice member s and a detachable stile Z adapted to engage With said bead and with said check-lip extension.
22. In a balance-window, the combination, a sash-frame X provided with the radial beads E and F and having a piercing 1), an L-shaped journal member consisting of a journal-bead G and a horizontal limb H having a butt-end H, said L-shaped journal member being provided with a dowel P adapted to engage with said piercing p, a detachable stile Z provided with longitudinal channels 6 and f, and having a journal-channe1 g, said detachable stile Z being provided with a piercing k having a niche n, a journal-bearing of U form having an elevated bearing 71, and provided with a dowel h having an anchor-fluke N whereby said journal-bearing may be held in fixed engagement in said piercing h, said detachable stile being provided with another piercing designated 20 adapted to hold in fixed engagement a weight chain anchor, as a means whereby said sash and said stiles may be balanced in sashways in said window.

In a balance-window, the combination, a sash-frame X having a radial head E provided with a bead-fender E, said sash-frame having a radial bead F provided with a beadfender F, a journal member adapted to engage with a journal-bearing, a journal-bearing of U form having inset plates 2" and 2' adapted to be fixed to the facing edge of a detachable stile, a detachable stile Z having longitudinal channels 6 and J, said detachable stile having fixed to its outwardly-facing edge three interstice members in position A and two intcrstice members in position C,
said interstice members being adapted to engage with a pulley-stile, a pulley-stile Y provided with a recess a and two recesses 0, 0 adapted to engage respectively with said interstice members at a predetermined point.
