l'ro ALL PERSONS TO WHOM THESE PRESENTS SHALL COME:
' Beit known that I, THOMASS.- CLOGSTON, of Boston, iii the county of Sulfolk, and State of Massachusetts,
have'inventcd a newtandtuseful- Improvement in Steam Boilers, and dorherebydeclare the following to'bea full, clear, and exact description thereof, duc reference being had to tlie accompanying drawings, making part of this specification, and in which- Figure l isa side elevation.
Figure 2, a front end elevation.
AFigure* 3, a vertical and longitudinal section; and n Figure 4f, la transverse section of a steam boiler constructed in accordance with my invention.,
Figure 5 being a front view of one of" the generators`V lhe'invention in question is an improvement in that class of steam boilers known as cast-iron sectional boilers, or those in which adseries of tubular sectionsin any requisite number, are riveted together to form 'a whole, and'which are enclosed in a suitable chamber of brick-work.
'lhc invention consists-in the peculiar construction, as well as the mode ofunion of'thc sections, as hercinaften described. 4 l I By referring te thc drawings above mentioned as illustrating my invention, the boiler will'he seen as consisting of a series of sections or generators,- A A, etc. cast in one homogeneous piece of iron, vand composed of a number of upright pipes or llues, E E, etc., of different lengths, the upper ends of which open into -two steam chambers, L L,'the lower ends of these pipes being joined by and opening into a semioircular or arched pipe or due, N, the ditfercntppcs being i-n open communication with cach other, and forming steam and water circulating chambers. The lower terminations of thc arched tluc N and those `of the outer rjright lines E E unite to ferm what I'tcrin the water-legs E E', the spacc'enclosed between these legs and below the arch being` the `fuel combustion-chamber'of the furnace. v:Each genera-tor is formed on cach side with five or any other suitable number of offsets, F F F, ctc., a port, I, being formed in eachoifsetto open communication between the intel rior of, the diil'er'ent sections.l Each'generator A is 'also formed with offsets I-I H, surrounding the steam chambers L L, which are' in a vertical plane with the offsets F F before mentioned. An annular groove, a, is formed in the faceof each of thcseofi'scts F H, etc., and surrounding the posts, as shown in fig. 3 of the drawings, and in such manner that'when the two generators are bolted togetherethese grooves 'shall come in alignment,'a suitable composition packing having previously been 'placed' in them, which seals the joint, and prcventsleakage fr'om the generator. Any suitable number of the above-described sections, according' to the required capacity of thefboiler, are to be securely bolted tgether, and.placed within a suitable chamber' of brick-Work, the outermost section forming the front en-d of the boiler. A rectangular tubular casing, B, is applied to this intersection by means of offsets and posts, formed upon it to correspond with those of the section, the fuel-supply door S being applied to this casing, as represented in the drawings, Furthermorgeach generator A. has a ue, C, communicating with the steam-chambers LL to extend upward into a common conduit orreservoir. A horizont'al foraminons'plate o1' partition, vl, is extended across the steam-chambers L L, as shown in-iig. 4, the com- ',bined area ofthe perforations of the plates, being equal to that of the'dischargeue C, or of just suicient capacity to carry' nii'. thel steam generated by the fines below them, the object of these foraminous plates being to divide the body of stcamntosniall jets, and preventits taking up the quantity of water with it, which is unavoidable in the employmen'tot" one large uc, thus enabling me to ecouomize the consumption of water, and to take offs, dry stcam, as it is termedV by engineers. By the application of the tubular chamber B, which connects the Water-legs E Et, I am enabled t-o empty the entire combined boiler of its contents of water.' "-fBy its employmentl also gain aradiating surface, and utilize much heat whichhas heretofore been lost, It also serves to reduce the temperature'of the parts about the fuelsupply door, and which has been the `first to be destroyed@ The bolts for securing the different sections together pass longitudinally through either or any of the ports I L, the/heads of. the bolts overlapping the exterior of the casing. By the above-described construction of the sections A A, I obtain' a large and rapidly radiating surfacev for generating steam, as well as excel. lent circulation throughout the section. v t
I claim a boilerror steamgene'rator Acomposed of one or more generators A, in which the upright or circulating ues, steam-chamber or chambers, and lower or arched flue are arranged substantially in the manner herein s'peecfi.l
I also claim the combination with the boilcror steam generator of the tubular casing surrounding the fuel supply door, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
THOMAS S. GLOGSTON.
